The Bearcats bring back a lot of talent this season. While Two Two All American Dan Filipek (3rd in 21', 4th in 22") as well as Region place-winners Jose Champagne & Vinnie Scaletta have since graduated, five NCAA Division II qualifiers & one All American return.
125 lbs Christian Mejia |
A 5th place All American in 2021, Christian Mejia went 22-5 on the season last year winning a Midwest Classic title & taking runner-up honors at the Super Region IV.
133 lbs Ryan Ripplinger OR Tyler Delaware |
Considering that Ryan Ripplinger who was 4th in the Super Region IV last year on a 22-13 record pinned Tyler Delaware twice, I don't think he'll be in danger of losing his spot this season. However it should be pointed out that Delaware defeated Collin Metzger an NCAA Division II qualifier from Colorado Mesa twice last season.
141 lbs Brody Norman OR Devin Schwartzkopf |
I think we could see a very good wrestle-off here at 141 lbs. Brody Norman was an NCAA DII qualifier last season finishing one match shy of All American status. Devin Schwartzkopf was an NCAA DII qualifier in 2021.
149 lbs Noah Villarreal |
A transfer from Virginia, Noah Villarreal had 13 wins on the season last year, one of which was a 12-2 major decision over Newberry NCAA DII qualifier in 2020, Josh Blatt.
165 lbs Corey Peterson |
Junior Corey Peterson had himself a good season last year. A runner-up finish at the Midwest Classic, he took 3rd place finishes at both the Super Region IV & the NCAA Division II championships.
174 lbs Josh Jones OR Zeke Waltz |
2021 NCAA Division II All American (4th) Josh Jones goes into his final season a three time NCAA Division II qualifier, looking to earn his fourth qualification & his second All American honor. The Chicago native will be backed by sophomore Zeke Waltz who went 8-1 on the season last year.
184 lbs Rozell Baker |
Replacing a guy like Dan Filipek is never easy but look to NJCAA Runner-up Rozell Baker a transfer from Ellsworth Community College to step up. Last season Baker went 17-9, with an impressive 10-6 decision over NCAA DII qualifier Cole Houser of Glenville State.
197 lbs Logan Kvien |
Last year Logan Kvien lost out on the varsity position losing a tight 7-6 match to starter Vinnie Scaletta. An impressive 16-1 technical fall over Ryan Herman of Maryville, look for Kvien to be impressive in his sophomore campaign.
HWT Ian Kuehl |
Still only a sophomore due to Covid-19 eligibility rules, Ian Kuehl is a two time NCAA Division II qualifier, who finished one match shy of All American honors last season.
