The leadership of upperclassmen will be the story of Mustang wrestling this season. Six returning NAIA qualifiers and two All Americans, four of them are seniors and two of them are juniors. It'll be a good year in Sioux City, Iowa.
125 lbs Evan Shell |
A Great Plains Athletic Conference (GPAC) runner-up last season, Evan Shell looks to win a conference title this season and make another trip to the NAIA championships.
133 lbs Taylor Vasquez |
Senior Taylor Vasquez will look for another GPAC title this season as well as NAIA All American honors.
133 lbs Logan Stumpf |
The sole underclassmen I can see having a breakout year for the Mustangs. Logan Stumpf placed 6th last season in the GPAC & will continue to get better having Vasquez to beat up on him every day in the room. Wrestled well at times last season & now that he has the initial freshman year out of the way, should see improvements.
141 lbs Noah Styskal |
NAIA qualifier Noah Styskal was 4th in the GPAC last season. Look for him to place higher this year.
149 lbs John Diener |
An up and down season last year for senior John Diener. While he won a GPAC title, he came up short of a second NAIA All American showing after placing 8th in 2021 as a sophomore. He will look to win another GPAC title and regain his All American status this season. He was Morningside's first All American & he has the opportunity to become their first two-timer.
157 lbs Caleb Connor |
Caleb Connor took 3rd place honors at the GPAC tournament last season, qualifying for the NAIA championships. He'll look for another high GPAC placing as well as another NAIA qualification this year.
197 lbs Hunter De Jong |
Along with John Diener, Hunter De Jong will be looking for a second All American honor this season, after taking 8th at the NAIA championships last season. Only a junior, he places this year & next, he will be the Mustang's first three time All American.
