Last season the Doane Tigers had a phenomenal showing qualifying 7 wrestlers to the NAIA championships, 6 of which are back this season. This includes a national champion, along with two other All Americans.
Junior Daniel Vargas will be gunning for his third All American honor this season as he placed 5th in 2021 and 6th last season.
In 64 years of NAIA wrestling, there have only been 7 wrestlers who have won four national titles. Baagii Boldmaa has the opportunity to become the eighth. Having gone undefeated the last two seasons, I'd say his chances of making history are pretty good. In the way we celebrate the great Japanese legends of yesteryear that Oklahoma State produced such as Uetake, someday we'll look back at the Mongolian legends that Doane produced such as Boldmaa.
Zamilpa took runner-up honors at the Great Plains Athletic Conference (GPAC) tournament last season and will again contend for a high placing within the conference this season.
Another Mongolian standout for the Tigers is Chinges Tsermaa. He Won a GPAC title last season and will be looking for his first All American honor this season.
A GPAC runner-up last season, Michael Scarponi will look for a conference title and another NAIA qualification this season.
Finishing 3rd at the GPAC tournament last season, Garrett Cornwell did not qualify for the NAIA championships, but I believe that he has a good shot this season.
Finishing right behind Garrett Cornwell at 4th place in the GPAC was Cael Jordan. It'll be tough to get two on through at the same weight class, but both Cornwell and Jordan are NAIA qualification material.
Bradley Antesberger had a fantastic season last year taking GPAC runner-up honors and a 4th place finish at the NAIA championships. With the COVID-19 making a mess of eligibility rules, I believe that he still has a shot a becoming a four time All American. I believe he's only listed as a sophomore for the 22'-23' season.
I suppose after beating teammate Odgerel Batkhisig in the GPAC finals last season, Brandon Antesberger wasn't exactly thrilled about going 2-2 at the NAIA tournament while Batkhishig claimed 4th place. At the same time though, it ought to give him confidence that he too can take a high placing at the NAIA championships this season.
