Gone, Lost & Forgotten: Their Best = Wisconsin River Falls

Located a half hour outside of St. Paul, Minnesota  The University of Wisconsin-River Falls was a team that competed hard within the NAIA throughout the 60's & resurfaced to an even more competitive team throughout the early to mid 80's.  The Falcons won Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) titles in 1964, 1965 & 1968.  Six top ten finishes at the NAIA tournament including a high of third place in both 1981 & 1982.  They also finished in third place at the 1985 NCAA Division III tournament.  The program was dropped after the 2001-2002 season. 


Larry Julian
HWT

Also a member of the Falcon football program, Julian won three WIAC titles & a runner-up finish at the 1961 NAIA tournament for the Falcons. 


Pat Mrotek
137 lbs 

Mrotek never wrestled during his time at Boyer High school.  Instead he picked it up during his freshman year of college in 1960.  Rather quick learner as he finished third at the WIAC tournament.  Injured as a sophomore, he'd go on to win the WIAC in 1962 & 1963.   Along with these accomplishments he also made the NAIA finals in 1963. 

Post college he would coach at both Montello & Cadott high schools earning a total of three regional titles & one sectional title.  He then got into officiating. 


Dick Culver
147 lbs 

A graduate of Ellsworth High School, Culver was a three time conference champion who finished in third place at the 1963 NAIA championships. 

Steve Schmidt
HWT  


Also a member of the Flacon Football team, Schmidt placed third at the 1967 NAIA championships. 

Craig Swenson 
130 lbs 


Swenson made the NAIA finals in 1968. 

Lyndell Johnson
158 lbs 


Johnson made the NAIA finals in 1970

Tom Kubiak
158 lbs 


A graduate of Pulaski High school, Kubiak had an outstanding career for the red & white making the NAIA finals in 1973 & finishing in third place in 1974.  

Post college he coached at both Menomonee Falls East & Mauston High schools before moving to California to became a Youth Authority. 



Gee Pope
134 lbs 

Pope was a two time WIAC champion & a two time NAIA All American during his time at Wisconsin-River Falls.  He took fourth in 1974 & second in 1975. 

Bruce Tonsor

Tonsor made the NAIA finals in 1976

Tom Conlon
167 lbs  


A native of St. Peter Minnesota, Tom Colon made the NAIA finals in 1980


Paul Frandsen
158 lbs 

Another graduate of Ellsworth High School, Frandsen had one of the best careers of Falcon wrestlers.  Winning three WIAC titles, he finished in third place at the 1981 NAIA championships, winning an NAIA title in 1982.  He finished out his career as the NAIA runner-up in 1983. 

Dave Newman
158 lbs 


Newman took third place at the NAIA tournament in 1981. 

Jim Meyer 
190 lbs 


Another great in Falcon wrestling history, Meyer won an  NAIA title in 1981 as a sophomore, finishing out his career with two NAIA runner-up finishes in 1982 & 1983. 

Terry Keller
158 lbs  


A native of Medford, Minnesota, Keller won three conference titles & had NAIA runner-up finishes in both 1982 & 1984. 


Brian Keller
167 lbs 


A three time conference champion, Keller earned All American status for the red & white on four occasions.  Twice in the NAIA with back to back third place finishes in 1985 & 1986 and twice in NCAA Division III with back to back fourth place finishes in the same seasons. 

Dave Brandvold
177 lbs 


Brandvold had a stellar career for the Falcons during his time at Wisconsin-River Falls. In 1984 he finished in sixth place at the NCAA Division III championships.  In 1985 he took runner-up honors at the NAIA championships before claiming a NCAA Division III title. 

Post college he took over the River Falls high school program, while teaching P.E. & assistant coaching football.  There he lead his squad to twelve conference, thirteen regional & five sectional team titles as well as finishing as the state runner-ups on two occasions.  All together he produced fifty-five state qualifiers, thirty-eight state place-winners & thirteen state champions. 

Matt Rena
HWT 

Rena was also a member of the Falcon football team that won the 1984 Conference championship.  As a wrestler, Rena had an outstanding senior season in 1985 going 28-2 in route to a runner-up finish at the NAIA tournament & an NCAA Division III title.  

Post college he had a short stint with the Minnesota Vikings & later coached football at Wisconsin-River Falls. 

Greg Kay
 


Kay was a four time conference finalist, winning titles his sophomore & junior seasons, as well as earning NAIA All American status on three occasions.  He placed seventh in 1987, fifth in 1988 & fourth in 1989. 

Post college he worked for Arrow Electric.
