Gone, Lost & Forgotten: Their Best = Grand Rapids Community College

I believe that the Raider wrestling program began in the 1968-1969 season & ended sometime in the early to mid 1990's.  Throughout the years they were fairly successful at an individual level producing NJCAA All Americans.

Jon "Ole" Galloway

A three time Indiana state champion for South Bend Riley high school, Galloway also played baseball & football during his time as a Raider.  Post college he served our country during the Vietnam war.

Tom "Tucker" Trachsel

A State champion for Grand Ledge High school in 1970, Trachsel was also a member of the Raider Football team during his time at Grand Rapids Community College.  He later spent his last two years of eligibility playing football & wrestling for Southern Illinois Carbondale.

Bob Ankeny

Ankeny wrestled for Alma High School where he won a state title his junior season, finishing fourth as a sophomore & third as a senior.  Competing for the Raiders, he won an NJCAA title in 1973 taking runner-up honors in 1974.  He finished out his wrestling career competing for Central Michigan.

Jim Shutich

Shutich spent one season at Grand Rapids Community college before transferring to Grand Valley State where he won an NAIA title in 1977.

Bill Roersma

After winning a NJCAA title in 1976, Roersma followed Shutich to Grand Valley State where he won an NAIA title in 1977.

John Selman

After his collegiate wrestling career was over Selman found more success in the international styles making the 1982 World Team.

Rob Rechsteiner
HWT

A little hard to recognize without his signature Fu Manchu, but indeed that is the Dog Faced Gremlin himself.   Rechsteiner began his collegiate wrestling career at Grand Rapids where he took a fourth place finish at the 1980 NJCAA championships.  He then transferred to the University of Michigan where he made the BIG 10 finals & to this day holds the fastest pin record.

Post college Rechsteiner found himself in professional wrestling, soon to be joined by his younger brother Scott as one of the hottest tag teams to ever grace the squared circle.  The two held some of the most coveted tag team championships in the world, including WWE & WCW.

Mark Toarmina

Another transplant from Indiana, Toarmina earned NJCAA All American status in both of his seasons as a Raider.  He placed fourth in 1982 & second in 1984.

He transferred to Oklahoma State for his final years of eligibility where he made the team in his senior season going 18-11, finishing as the BIG 12 runner-up.

Kannon Kares

A 1984 State champion for Eaton Rapids, Kares spent a season wrestling for Grand Rapids Community college before finishing up his career at Louisiana State.

Anthony Crater

Crater won a state title for Northern High School before coming to Grand Rapids.  He finished out his collegiate career wrestling for the Wolverines of Michigan.

His son Anthony Jr was one of the best basketball players in the state.  He played Division I basketball for both Ohio State & South Florida.

Stan Gress

Gress began his collegiate career wrestling for Waubonsee Valley but after they dropped their wrestling program post his freshman season he had to find a new home.  He then wrestled his sophomore season for Grand Rapids Community College.  He finished up his final two seasons for Eastern Illinois where he was a two time NCAA Division II qualifier.  Imagine if you will wrestling for three different institutions, and none of them have wrestling anymore.

Post college Gress taught high school health & ran his own construction business.

Mike Faulkner

Faulkner began his collegiate career at Grand Rapids before transferring to Ferris State where he took 8th in the nation in 1991.

Dave Andruc

Andruc a state champion out of Sparta High School, took seventh place NJCAA All American honors in 1992.
