Gone, Lost & Forgotten: Their Best = Wayne State (Michigan)

It's particularly fun as an amateur wrestling historian to discover that there are two Wayne States & both of them at one time had wrestling programs.  The one I'm focusing on now is Wayne State University located in Detroit, Michigan.  An NCAA Division II institution.

Emmett "Skip" Evans

Evans qualified for the NCAA Division II championships in 1968.  He later became head coach of Dondero High school.

Edwin Barnett

Had it not been for moving while in high school, the world of wrestling may never have gotten to know Edwin Barnett.  Originally from Corinth, Mississippi, Barnett began wrestling as a freshman at Warren Fitzgerald High school. There he placed third in the Michigan high school state championships.  Wrestling for the Warriors he put together a career record of 43-5, securing 19 falls and making the regional finals four years straight.

Post college he became a marine & later a special agent in the F.B.I.

  1. The last year Wayne State University had a wrestling team was the 1975-76 season. Jeff Mason (Lake Orion High School) and Jon Snyder (Detroit Catholic Central High School) were elected captains for the following season. It was rumored that the NCAA Div. II Championships were to be held in Detroit for the 1976-77 season. However, the wrestling team was cancelled due to title IX and there Has never been another wrestling team at WSU since.
It would be wonderful to see the sport re-emerge and showcase some of the vast talent within Detroit and the surrounding areas.
