Gone, Lost & Forgotten: Their Best = Towson

If you're the type of person that believes in a wrestler doing multiple sports besides just wrestling, this will be a fun read for you.  Nearly all of the wrestlers featured in this article competed in other sports while at Towson.

Located about 15 minutes northeast of Baltimore, The Tigers of Towson today are NCAA Division I competing in the Colonial Athletic Association.   During the time they had wrestling, up through the 1984-1985 season, they were NCAA Division II & competed in the Mason Dixon conference.

Dick Clem

Playing Soccer in the fall & baseball in the spring, Clem was a runner-up at the Mason-Dixon conference tournament.

Larry Gross

While a member of the Lacrosse & wrestling teams, Larry Gross' real love was soccer.  Post college he coached wrestling for a spell at Maryland-Baltimore College before moving on to coach both men & women's soccer.  He coached at Virginia as well as North Carolina State where he lead the women to an NCAA runner-up finish.

Don Hughes

Another member of the Soccer program, Hughes was a runner-up at the Mason-Dixon conference tournament.

Ed Humm

An all around athlete, Humm earned letters in Soccer, wrestling & baseball during his time at Towson.

John Lowe

Lowe was also a member of the soccer & baseball teams during his time as a Tiger.  Post college he took it upon himself to get wrestling programs started at as many schools in Baltimore County as he could.  Within the city of Baltimore alone, many of the wrestling programs were started with Lowe's influence.  He taught Math, Science & P.E. at the high school level.

Don Sudbrink

The late Don Sudbrink a graduate of Dundalk High school was a standout athlete in soccer, lacrosse & wrestling.  As a soccer player he was all Mason-Dixon as a goalie.  In wrestling he won a Mason-Dixon conference title.   He later taught psychology courses at John Carroll high school before taking over as Principal.

Bill Owings

How many people can say they won conference titles in two different sports during their time in college?  Owings won Mason Dixon titles in both wrestling & tennis during his time as a Tiger.

Ted Snyder

Considering how things have been for such a long time in the history of our sport it's hard to believe that a person at one time could have done both basketball & wrestling while in college.  Snyder did.  He also played baseball.

Eugene Spurrier

Spurrier was born completely blind.  Wanting him to have similar experiences & opportunities it was suggested to his parents that they put him in wrestling.  He excelled winning a Mason-Dixon Conference title in 1953.   He was also a member of Towson's Glee Club & a lead singer in the Choir.

Dennis Shifflett

Another graduate of Dundalk High school, Shifflett spent his first two seasons at Essex Community College before coming to Towson.  While competing for the Tigers he won two Mason-Dixon conference titles, earning trips to the NCAA Division II tournament in 1972 & 1973.   Post college he was an assistant coach at Fallston High School.

Dennis Psoras

Graduating at Valedictorian in high school, Psoras came to Towson to play soccer & to wrestle.  In his sophomore season of 1947-1948 he won a Mason-Dixon conference title but his studies & athletics career was put on hold as he was drafted to serve our country during the war.

He came back to school in the fall of 1954 to play soccer & at the 1955 Mason-Dixon Conference championships came in in second place.  1956 as a senior, he won his second Mason-Dixon conference title.

For the record Towson no longer has a soccer program either.
