Gone, Lost & Forgotten: Western Athletic Conference Team Titles Won by Schools that No Longer Have Wrestling

This is another one that gets a little confusing.  The Western Athletic Conference  is made up of mainly schools that are today Division I but earlier in their history were Division II or another division lower than Division I.

I think at one time the WAC had both a Division I and a Division II status.  I say this because in the same years both Brigham Young and Cal State Bakersfield claim to have won WAC titles.  In those years, Bakersfield was NCAA Division II.

I'm not sure when WAC wrestling ceased to exist.  I'm not sure if WAC was always two Divisions or if it became two divisions.   For other conferences such as the NEIWA there was a time period when they had two separate tournaments.  One for the University division and one for the college division.  It think that happened here.  I'm not for certain.

All I do know is that when the WAC formed in the 1962-1963 season, they sponsored wrestling at the time.   I have information regarding tournaments from 1963 through 1981.

Schools that no longer have wrestling that won WAC titles

Brigham Young (12) 1963, 1966, 1967, 1968, 1971, 1973, 1975, 1977, 1978, 1979, 1980, 1981

Utah (1) 1969

New Mexico (1) 1972

Colorado State (1) 1974

If you have any information of WAC wrestling 1982 until when it was dropped please share.  Thank you.
