Gone, Lost & Forgotten: CIAA Team Championships won by Schools that No Longer have Wrestling

The Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) formed in 1912 was originally made up of historically black colleges & I believe (but don't know for sure) that when they began wrestling in the 1940-1941 season they were the first historically black conference to sponsor wrestling.

The CIAA is still around today but no longer sponsors wrestling.  I have found results up through 1981 but nothing 1982 until the date the conference stopped sponsoring wrestling. I also have nothing but a couple of names from 1940-1941 to 1953-1954. (Although I do think the conference dropped wrestling during World War II and then picked it up again after.)

Here are the schools that won CIAA titles that no longer have wrestling programs.

Lincoln University of Pennsylvania (3) 1954, 1959, 1960

Virginia State (5) 1955, 1956, 1957, 1958, 1961

Howard (6) 1962, 1966, 1967, 1968, 1969, 1971

Morgan State (3) 1963, 1964, 1965

Norfolk State (1) 1977

Winston-Salem (1) 1980

  1. Found some info about CIAA wrestling earlier today. An article about the 1990 championships. So I know they had wrestling until at least 1989-1990.
