2023 NCAA DI Wrestling The Season: Oregon State

*NOTE* - I want to make it clear what this is and what this is not.  What this is NOT is an overview of the entire team. What this is, is a who’s who preview of THIS season 2022-2023. Meaning that I am going to talk about the starters who I feel will have an impact THIS year. Those who will win big matches in duals. Those who will earn placings in major tournaments like CKLV, RENO, MIDLANDS, MATMEN INVITE, SOUTHERN SCUFFLE, CONFERENCES & NCAA’s.  In some cases a weight class will have multiple talented wrestlers. I will note that & I will also be making posts later on about the best wrestle-offs to look forward to this season.  Then after that is determined I will make post later into the season of who our best backups are in the nation.

This post will NOT include redshirts. Those who are redshirting this season will be included in a separate post entitled “22’-23’ Best Redshirts.”

While the Beavers do graduate three of their four All Americans from last season, they do return quite a bit of talent. I can see them having as many as eight NCAA qualifiers & as many as three All Americans this season.  Gone is two time PAC-12 champion Devan Turner who earned 8th place All American honors last season. Also gone is four time PAC-12 finalist Grant Willits who won two titles & took home a 4th place All American honor last season. Brother Hunter, a four time PAC-12 runner-up, who placed 7th at the NCAA's is also gone. Last by certainly not least, also gone is two time PAC-12 3rd place finisher Cory Crooks.

125 lbs
Brandon Kaylor

Junior Brandon Kaylor had himself a very nice season last year going 22-7 capturing 3rd place finishes at both CKLV & the PAC 12 Championships, earning a 8th place All American finish at the NCAA's.  Brandon Courtney of Arizona State stands between him & a PAC-12 title this year. Thus far he's 0-4 against the Sun Devil, but in recent 1 & 2 point matches, he has closed the gap.

133 lbs
Jason Shaner Jr

He's been biding his time as a backup most of his career & now in his final season of eligibility Jason Shaner Jr will get his opportunity. Thus far he's had impressive victories including Reece Witcraft of Oklahoma State 6-4 as well as defeating EIWA champ Malyke Hines of Lehigh 10-8.

149 lbs
Triston Lara

2021 NCAA qualifier Triston Lara will spend his final season of eligibility in Corvallis. Among his notable wins a 5:31 fall of Iowa State's Jaret Degen & a 9-4 decision over Arizona State's Kyle Parco.

157 lbs
Isaiah Crosby

The Iowa Western Community College transfer doesn't have many DI matches under his belt yet, but an 8-6 victory over Charlie Darracott suggest that he will be competitive within the PAC-12 this season & look for NCAA qualification.

165 lbs
Matt Olguin

I definitely feel that under the leadership of Coach Pendleton, Matt Olguin will be an All American before his career is all said & done. He's already shown great potential with victories over Adam Kemp of Cal Poly, Anthony Valencia of Arizona State & Brian Meyer of Lehigh.  He was 3rd in the PAC-12 last season, a NCAA qualifier.

174 lbs
Aaron Olmos

You know Aaron Olmos defeated PAC-12 champion Tyler Eischens of Stanford twice last season. Once 6-4 & the other time he really lit him up in a 12-4 major decision. Yet when the conference championships came around, Eischens walked away with a gold medal, a bracket sheet & an NCAA qualification while Olmos finished in 5th. That has to leave a bitter taste in Olmos's mouth.  He's shown throughout the season that he CAN win a PAC-12 title. It's simply a matter of making it happen.

184 lbs
Trey Munoz

Only a sophomore, I wouldn't be the least bit surprised if Trey Munoz doesn't end his career a four time PAC-12 champ & a three time All American. He was one match away from earning All American status last season, ironically majoring Jonathan Loew of Cornell 12-2 during the tournament, who did earn All American. He also pinned Berne Truax of Cal Poly in the PAC-12 finals in a little over a minute.  A Reno Champ & 5th in the Mat Men Open, the future is bright for this Beaver.

197 lbs
   Ryan Reyes OR Tanner Harvey

14-7 on the year last season, junior Ryan Reyes also had a 6th place finish at the Mat Men Open. Even though Tanner Harvey hasn't competed in the last two seasons, he still has a season of eligibility left. Before transferring to Oregon State, he had EIWA placements of 4th & 3rd.
