2023 NCAA DI The Season: Oklahoma State

The elephant in the room can't be avoided so might as well mention it & then quickly move on. The loss of NCAA champion A.J. Ferrari is going to be felt.  As will the losses of  two time All American/three time BIG 12 finalist Kaid Brock, two time All American Dakota Geer & 2021 NCAA qualifier Austin Harris. On the positive side, the Cowboys do return quite a bit of talent & should qualify all 10 to the NCAA's.

125 lbs
Trevor Mastrogiovanni

If you told me that John Smith purposefully recruits lightweights with long, hard to pronounce last names, I'd believe it. Albeit, Mastrogiovanni is easier to learn than Picciccinni ever was. Regardless, the sophomore has earned two NCAA qualifications thus far, with impressive wins over Pat McKee of Minnesota & Taylor LaMont of Wisconsin. He'll contend for All American honors this season.

133 lbs
Daton Fix

A three time NCAA runner-up, Daton Fix could very well face adversary Roman Bravo-Young of Penn State in the finals for the third time in a row. Young has thus far won 4-2 sudden victory & 3-2 decisions.  They say the hardest thing to do in wrestling is beat a good wrestler three times in a row. That saying favors the Cowboy.

141 lbs
Carter Young    OR      Dusty Hone

I think we have ourselves a good wrestle off here at 141 lbs. Carter Young was an NCAA qualifier this past season & Dusty Hone was an NCAA qualifier  in 2020. Both have quality wins in their careers thus far. Young has defeats over Cody Phippen of Air Force, Darren Miller of Bucknell & Carter Happel of Northern Iowa. Hone's wins a bit more impressive, including that of Kyle Shoop of Lock Haven, Tariq Wilson of North Carolina State & Clay Carlson of South Dakota State. I'll say it again, should be a good wrestle-off.

149 lbs
Kaden Gfeller
Well gee there feller despite information to the contrary given on 3-16-22, Kaden Gfeller WILL be back this season. The Cowboy has thus far won two BIG 12 titles & two Southern Scuffle titles, as he goes for an All American honor in what will his final attempt.

157 lbs
Wyatt Sheets

You never know what's in store for three time NCAA qualifier Wyatt Sheets. As he proved in 2021 with an 8th place finish, sometimes "a lot" is exactly what to expect out of him. Other times, it's not. At 88 career wins thus far, one thing is for sure, he'll surpass that 100 win mark.

165 lbs
Travis Wittlake

This is the biggest question mark Oklahoma State has going into the 22'-23' season. I'm not sure what in the heck was going on last season, but something wasn't right with Travis Wittlake. You don't go from a 22-3 record in 2021, earning 4th place All American honors to going 9-7 & 0-2 at the BIG 12's in 2022 unless something is drastically wrong. Unlike NCAA football & NCAA basketball, NCAA wrestling is incredibly cryptic surrounding the issues that involve a wrestler's performance. All I know is that if 100%, you can sure and well add Wittlake's name to the list of potential national champions. He may have gotten lost & forgotten among the mix this past season, but if he's back, he'll be remembered soon enough.

174 lbs
Dustin Plott

21-6 on the season last year, two time NCAA qualifier Dustin Plott earned his first All American honor with a 6th place finish at the NCAA tournament. One that consistently improves, it'll be interesting to see where he ends up this season.

184 lbs
Kyle Haas

11-0 as a redshirt last season, I think it's fair to say that the jury is still out on Kyle Haas until further testimony has been conducted. He didn't face anyone last season of real significance to indicate how he'll fair against the best of the best at 184 this season. His best win, as far as I'm concerned was over NCAA DII 6th place finisher Alex Kauffman of Central Oklahoma. Being the younger brother of Tyler Caldwell, I'd wager to say that the odds are good, but I do think I'm being fair in asking to see him against top 25 DI competition before I make up my mind.

197 lbs
Luke Surber

An NCAA qualifier this past season & an impressive 6-4 sudden victory over Missouri's Zach Elam, I thought Luke Surber looked pretty good at HWT. Now he's down to 197 lbs. Anxious to see how this turns out.

HWT
Konner Doucet

A 3-1 victory over West Virginia's Michael Wolfgram & a 4-3 victory over Michigan State's Ryan Vasbinder gives reason to think that Connor Doucet will have a respectable season this year & qualify for the NCAA championships.
