Gone, Lost & Forgotten: Their Best = College of the Sequoias

 Named after the Giant Sequoia trees in the area, College of the Sequoias is located in Visalia, about forty-five minutes south of Fresno.   Their glory years were towards the end of their run on the mat, winning CCCAA titles in 1981 & 1984.  The program was dropped after the 1984-1985 season. 


Ray Hernandez
123 lbs 

Hernandez won two league & two district titles for Corcoran High school before coming to Sequoias.  He won a CCCAA title in 1966.   He then went on to wrestle for San Francisco State where he won a Far Western Conference title.  After his collegiate career was over he coached at the high school level. 


Vic Gonzales
115, 123 lbs 

Another graduate of Corcoran High, Gonzales was a two time league champion before coming to Sequoias.  He won a CCCAA championship in 1968 & finished as the CCCAA runner-up in 1969.  He then transferred to Fresno State where he finished up his collegiate career. 

He later coached at McLane High School before getting into officiating. 


Al Gutierrez


Gutierrez won CCCAA titles for the Giants in 1980 & 1981. 

Joshua Washington



After taking CCCAA runner-up honors in 1980, Washington won a CCCAA title in 1981. 


Jeff Chedester
118 lbs 

Chedester won a CCCAA title for the Giants in 1982.  He went on to wrestle for Cal Poly & later got into the fresh produce business. 

Scott Bilveu
177 lbs  


Bilveu came to Sequoias from Clovis High school where he finished runner-up at the 1981 high school state championships.  Wrestling for the Giants, Bilveu was seventh in the CCCAA in 1982 & won a CCCAA title in 1983. 


Ricky Salas


Salas won a CCCAA title in 1984.
