JT1Wrestle Takes A Look at South Dakota State 2026-2027

Between the ends of eligibility & the transfer portal, I have to be honest, South Dakota State was hit pretty hard coming into 2026-2027.  Nonetheless, I still expect there to be some great moments for the Jackrabbits during their first season in the PAC-12.

Gone....

Daniel Guanajuato who had wins over Conrad Hendriksen & Tucker Owens last season will be competing for Northern Colorado this year.

I thought Derrick Cardinal had another season of eligibility left but he's not on the '26-'27 Jackrabbit roster & I can't find him anywhere else.  A two-time NCAA DI qualifier who had CKLV finishes of 6th-7th-7th.

Julian Tagg ended his career at two-time NCAA DI qualifier, 5th & 6th in the BIG 12.

Like Derrick Cardinal, I'm not 100% certain on the status of Alek Martin. He's another I thought had more time left but I cannot find him on SDSU's roster or any other roster at the moment.   An NCAA DI qualifier in 2024, he redshirted in 2025.  Last year he placed 8th at CKLV, with a very impressive 15-6 major over Gabe Willochell, but then disappeared shortly after that.

Both of the Espinoza-Owens brothers, Marcus & Moses are going to wrestle for Utah Valley this season.

Bennett Berge, 4th in the DI nation in 2024, is going to finish up his career for Oklahoma State

Back...

125
Brody Roark

20 wins on the season, including one over two-time All-American Jore Volk, Brody Roark placed 6th at the BIG 12's.

133
Cale Seaton

16 wins on the season for Cale Seaton, including wins over Blake Boarmann, Carter Schmidt & teammate Derrick Cardinal.

141
Tyson Peach

'25-'26 wasn't the best season for Tyson Peach, but he gave some good reason to be excited about his potential in '24-'25.  Won 14 matches two years ago, including giving Vance Vombaur a very tight 4-3 match.  If he can get back to form, will be very competitive in the PAC-12.

157
Cael Swensen

Casel Swensen heads into 2026-2027 looking to become a four-time NCAA DI qualifier.  He was 4th in the BIG 12 this past season, and one match shy of placing at CKLV.

174
Drake Rhodes

Unfortunately Drake Rhodes was hurt last year, but the 2025 NCAA DI qualifier should return to form & once again qualify for the NCAA DI championships in 2027.

HWT
Luke Rasmussen

7th-3rd-6th in the BIG 12, the two-time NCAA DI qualifier will look for his fourth conference placement within the PAC-12. He'll also be looking for another CKLV medal, as he was 7th in Vegas last year.
