Four (or More) Time State Champions in College = North Dakota

 North Dakota may not have much for population, but nevertheless the state has produced quite a few four (or more) time state champions and surprisingly enough many of them have fared pretty well on the collegiate level. 

Dave Stewart 

North Dakota crowned its first four time State Champion in Dave Stewart from Williston. He won titles from 58'-61'.  Collegiately he competed for Minot State where he won three conference titles going 53-6 during his career. 

Scott Kelly 

Scott Kelly won four North Dakota High School State titles from 79'-82'. From what I could find he did not wrestle in college. 

Dave Hilliard 

Dave Hilliard won five North Dakota High School State titles for Lakota. Earning his first title in 1980, he would then win titles from 82'-85'. From what I could find, he did not wrestle in college. 

Bret Maughan 

Representing Fargo North, Bret Maughan won four North Dakota High School State titles from 83'-86. He competed for North Dakota State while in college earning NCAA Division II All American honors of 3rd place as a junior in 1990 & making the NCAA DII finals in 1991 as a senior. 

Nathan Brenna 


Nathan Brenna won four North Dakota High School State titles for Watford City from 86'-89'. From what I could find he did not wrestle in college. 

Mark Pazdernik 

Representing New Salem, Mark Pazdernik won his first three North Dakota State High School championships from 89'-91'. He won his fourth in 1993.  Collegiately he competed for North Dakota State where he was a three time NCAA Division II All American. Placing 8th as a freshman in 1995, he was then 7th in 1997 as a junior, finishing his career off in 1998 with a national championship. During this time he also won two conference championships. 

Troy Sabot 

Troy Sabot won four High School State titles for Bismarck Century from 92'-95'. He started off his collegiate career at Oregon State but then transferred to North Idaho where he was 8th at the 1999 NJCAA championships. 


Ryan Bachman 


Ryan Bachman won four North Dakota High School State titles for Cavalier from 95'-98'. To my findings, he did not wrestle in college. 

Travis Lang 

Travis Lang of Bismarck High won his first North Dakota High School State title in 2000. He then won three more from 02'-04'.  Competing for Augsburg in college, Lang was a two time NCAA Division III All American taking back to back 5th place finishes his junior & senior seasons of 2008 & 2009 respectively. 

Levi Haugen 


Representing Bishop Ryan, Levi Haugen won five North Dakota High School State titles from 01'-05'.  He began his collegiate career at North Dakota State, then transferring to McKendree. 

Phil Basting 


Phil Basting won four North Dakota High School State titles for Grand Forks Red River from 01'-04'. Collegiately he competed for Regina (Canada). 

Ben Imdieke 

Ben Imdieke won four North Dakota High School State titles for Linton from 01'-04'. An NAIA qualifier his true freshman season for Mary, Imdieke then transferred to North Dakota State. 

Scott Glasser 

Scott Glasser was a five time North Dakota State champion for Bismarck from 02'-06'. Collegiately he wrestled for Minnesota where he collected 101 wins as a two time NCAA qualifier. A BIG 10 runner-up as a junior in 2010, he also placed twice at the Southern Scuffle collecting 3rd as a junior in 2010 and 4th as a senior in 2011. 

Jake Mellmer 

Representing Dickinson, Jake Mellmer won four North Dakota High School State titles from 04'-07'. He wrestled collegiately for Minnesota. 

Kriss McCleary 

Kriss McCleary won North Dakota High School State titles for Napoleon from 05'-08'. Starting off his collegiate career at North Dakota State, he then transferred to Mary. 

Justin Solberg 

Representing Wahpeton, Justin Solberg won his first North Dakota High School State title in 2004. He followed it up with three more from 06'-08'.  Collegiately he competed for North Dakota State. 

Michael Nord

Michael Nord of Lisbon won his first three North Dakota High School State titles from 07'-09'. He then won his fourth title in 2011. He went on to compete for Jamestown in college, making the NAIA finals in 2015 as a junior, finishing in 8th place as a senior in 2016. 

Eric Forde 

Representing Fargo South, Eric Forde won North Dakota High School State titles from 08'-11'. Collegiately he competed for St. Cloud State where he was a Region runner-up his sophomore season. 

Joe Schumacher 

Joe Schumacher was a four time State champion for Bismarck from 08'-11'. He started off his collegiate career at Oklahoma State, then transferring to Minnesota-Moorhead. 

Jordan Shearer 

Jordan Shearer has the distinction of not only being North Dakota's first but also being North Dakota's only six time State champion. He won his titles form 10'-15'  for West Fargo. Collegiately he competed for Nebraska. 

Ryan Blees 

Ryan Blees won four North Dakota High School State titles for Bismarck from 11'-14'. He began his college  career at Oklahoma State, then transferring to Virginia Tech. He was a two time NCAA qualifier in his final two seasons, making the ACC finals as a junior in 2018. 

Erik Loepp 

Representing Oakes, Erik Loepp won five North Dakota High School State titles from 11'-15'. He competed collegiately for Minnesota State Moorhead.

Kyle Burwick is currently as Wisconsin. A two time NCAA qualifier, he has three years of eligibility remaining. 

Jared Franek of West Fargo is at North Dakota State. A three time NCAA qualifier, he has twice been one match shy of All American honors. For the record he had the highest academic standing of any wrestler out of the 330 2022 NCAA qualifiers. 

Ryan Ripplinger of Bismark was at North Dakota State, now he is at McKendree

Clay Gerhardt of New Salem & Almont is at Dickinson State

Reece Burnhardt  of Bismarck St Mary's is at Mary 

As to.....

Garrett Jangula of Napoleon, Jordan Sours of Lisbon and Boeden Greeley of Lisbon...not for sure.
