New Mexico is one of those states that is often overlooked that has within the past 25+ years produced its fair share of four time state champions that have had success at the collegiate level. Again, it's obviously not an Ohio or Pennsylvania, but it's not a Mississippi either.
Kirk Hudson |
New Mexico's first four time State champion was Kirk Hudson of Albuquerque Academy who won titles from 78'-81'. To my findings, he did not wrestle in college.
Bo Wade |
A four time New Mexico state champion for Eldorado from 81'-84', to my knowledge Bo Wade did not wrestle in college.
Charlie Dotson |
Charlie Dotson won four New Mexico State High School Championships for Eldorado from 84'-87'. Collegiately he competed for New Mexico where he was a two time NCAA qualifier.
Scott Owen |
Winning titles from 94'-98' for Carlsbad, Scott Owen became New Mexico's first five time High School State champion. Collegiately he competed for Northern Illinois where he took back to back 5th place finishes at the NCAA tournament his junior & senior seasons. Going 116-22 during his collegiate career he also won three Mid-American Conference Titles.
Troy Owen |
Troy Owen won four New Mexico High School State titles from 96'-99' for Carlsbad. From what I could find he did not wrestle collegiately.
Sam Trujillo |
Sam Trujillo won his first New Mexico High School State title in 2002. He'd win three more between 04'-06'. Collegiately he wrestled for New Mexico Highlands.
Adam Martinez |
Adam Martinez won his first New Mexico High School State title in 2002. He'd win three more between 04'-06'. He wrestled for New Mexico Highlands in college.
Steve Gilbert |
Representing Albuquerque Academy, Steve Gilbert won four New Mexico High School State titles from 03'-06'. Collegiately he competed for Army.
Matt Ortega |
Matt Ortega won four New Mexico High School State titles for Rio Rancho from 04'-07'. He competed collegiately for Indiana.
Vicente Varela |
Vicente Varela won four New Mexico State High School Championships for Rio Rancho from 04-07. He started off his collegiate career at Arizona State where he was a two time PAC-12 place-winner, taking 7th in 2009 & 6th in 2010. He then transferred to Hofstra where he was a CAA runner-up in 2011. That season he also placed 6th at CKLV.
Max Ortega |
Representing Rio Rancho, Max Ortega won five New Mexico High School State titles from 05'-09'. He wrestled as a true freshman at Indiana & then transferred to Adams State.
Jake Martinez |
Jake Martinez won four New Mexico High School State titles for Robertson from 06'-09'. From what I could find he did not wrestle in college.
Wally Diaz |
Wally Diaz won four New Mexico High School State titles for Robertson from 06'-09'. From what I could find he did not wrestle in college.
Louie Trujillo |
Louie Trujilo of Rio Rancho won four New Mexico High School State titles from 07'-10'. He competed collegiately for Adams State.
Daniel Martinez |
Daniel Martinez won five New Mexico High School State titles for Robertson from 07'-11'. He began his collegiate career at New Mexico Highlands, but had it cut short due to developing cancer during his freshman year.
Jesse Martinez |
Representing St. Michael's, Jesse Martinez won four New Mexico High School State titles from 09'-12'. Collegiately, he competed for New Mexico Highlands.
Eric Montoya |
Eric Montoya won four New Mexico High School State championships for Volcano Vista from 09'-12'. Collegiately he enjoyed an outstanding career for the Nebraska Cornhuskers. Earning All American honors his junior & senior seasons, he placed 5th in 2016 & 6th in 2017 respectively. He also placed at the prestigious Midlands tournament these years as well, taking 3rd in 2016 & winning a title in 2017.

Phil Mascarenas won four New Mexico High School State titles for Cleveland between 10'-13'. From what I could find he did not wrestle in college.
Koery Windham |
Koery Windham won five New Mexico High School State titles for St Michael's from 10'-14'. He competed collegiately for Adams State taking NCAA Division II All American honors of 5th in 2019.
Rico Montoya |
Rico Montoya won five New Mexico State titles for Robertson from 11'-15'. Collegiately he competed for Northern Colorado where he was a three time NCAA qualifier. He also placed 4th at the Southern Scuffle his junior season.
Anthony Juckes |
Representing Piedra Vista, Anthony Juckes won five New Mexico High School State championships from 11'-15'. Collegiately he wrestled for Wyoming.
Jose Tapia |
Jose Tapia won five Ne Mexico State High School titles for Capital from 13'-17'. Collegiately he wrestled for George Mason.

Wes Rayburn of Piedra Vista is at Colorado School of Mines
Nick Rino of Piedra Vista is at Utah Valley
Zeke Marquez of Silver is at Lander
Javier Tapia who won titles for both Capital and Pojoaque is/was at Western Wyoming (Not sure if he has more time there or if he's transferring)
Andrew Trujillo of Robertson is at New Mexico Highlands
Alex Holguin of Cobre is at Colorado Mesa
