Four (Or More) Time State Champions In College = Maryland

 I'll be honest, I was rather shocked when I learned that the first state tournament in Maryland wasn't until 1970. With wrestling as popular as it is on the coast, it's weird to think that states like Louisiana & Alabama have had state wrestling tournaments longer than Maryland has. Nonetheless, here are Maryland's four time state champions & how they did at the collegiate level to the best of my knowledge.

Matt Slutzky

Winning four Maryland High School State titles for Aberdeen from 89'-92', Matt Slutzky wrestled his first three years of collegiate competition at Syracuse. He transferred to Maryland for his final season.

Steve Kessler

Steve Kessler was a four time Maryland High School State champion for Owings Mills from 94'-97'.  He competed collegiately for Iowa Central where in 1999 he was a District Champion, earning an NJCAA All American finish of 3rd.

Josh Asper

A four time Maryland State champion for Hereford from 05'-08', Josh Asper had an outstanding career competing for Maryland in college. A two time All American earning 6th place finishes in his sophomore & Junior seasons, he was a match away from earning more All American finishes in both his freshman & senior seasons.  Also a four time ACC finalist, he won titles in his sophomore & senior seasons.

George Scheffel

Winning four Maryland State High School titles for Southern Garrett from 07'-10', George Scheffel competed collegiately for West Virginia.

Nathan Kraisser

Representing Centennial, Nathan Kraisser won four Maryland High School State championships from 09'-12'.  Collegiately he began his career at North Carolina where he earned ACC runner-up honors as a freshman in 2014.  He then transferred to Campbell where he earned All American honors of 8th place his senior season of 2017. Along with this outstanding accomplishment he was also a two time Southern Conference finalist, winning a title his junior season as well as a two time Southern Scuffle place-winner with finishes of 4th & 7th.

Baby J Bannister

Representing Bishop McNamara, Alfred "Baby J" Bannister won four Maryland High School State titles from 11'-14'.  He took his 274 victories to Maryland where he qualified for the NCAA Championships in his sophomore & junior seasons of 2017 and 2018. Along with also being an 8th place finisher at the Midlands as a sophomore he graduated with 100 victories.

====

Short and sweet but the four timers from Maryland continue to represent at the collegiate level.

Aaron Brooks of North Hagerstown is currently at Penn State. Already a two time NCAA champ & a three time BIG 10 champ, he has two years of eligibility left.

Jason Kraisser of Centennial spent some time at Campbell and is now at Iowa State. Believe he has at least one season if not two left.
