Four (Or More) Time State Champions In College = California

Now the first official High School State tournament in California took place in 1973. With that said an unofficial tournament goes all the way back to 1926 & a tournament governed by the California Interscholastic Federation Southern Section (CIFSS) began in 1937. With that said, no matter how you look at it, a four time champion was not crowned until 2002.

With THAT said, I think it is only fair to look at California a little differently than you would the other 48 states (48 as in we JUST got Mississippi  sanctioned into high school wrestling).  There have been so many California wrestlers over the years that came so close to winning four titles who went on to stellar collegiate careers.

Marty Kistler 2-2-1-1, a two time NCAA champ for Iowa
Eric Guerrero 3-1-1-1, a three time NCAA champ for Oklahoma State
Nathan Morgan 2-1-1-1 a three time All American for Oklahoma State
Jason Welch 2-1-1-1, a three time All American for Northwestern
Alex Cisneros 1-1-1-2 wrestled at Cornell
Isaiah Martinez 3-1-1-1 a four time NCAA finalist/Two Time Champ for Illinois
Anthony Valencia 1-1-2-1 an All American for Arizona State/4 time PAC-12 Champion

The list goes on & I think something needed to be said considering that California only has one class. Nevertheless the series focuses on four (or more) time state champions so here we go.

Darrell Vasquez

Vasquez, California's first four time State champion for Bakersfield wrestled collegiately for Cal Poly. Placing 4th at the NCAA championships as a freshman in 2004, Vasquez would unfortunately have health problems that kept him from reaching his true potential. Nevertheless he made a recovery & by the time he was a senior, he came back to earn a second All American honor of 5th place.

And well that's it for history.  The other four time champs from California to my knowledge are all still competing in college.

The story of Justin Mejia of Clovis (14'-17') is a long & complicated one. He committed to Iowa, then changed to Illinois & finally ended up at Fresno State. He won a NJCAA title for Clackamas last season & I believe he has another year of junior college eligibility for this upcoming season.

Seth Nevills of Clovis (15'-18') is at Penn State. He put together an overall varsity record of 20-7 & technically still has two years of varsity wrestling remaining. Yet he played football this past season & I'm not sure if it means that he's going to stick strictly to football or if he's going to do both.  He has Greg Kerkvliet to contend with for the HWT spot.

Jesse Vasquez who won state titles for St John Bosco, Santiago & Excelsior Charter is currently at Arizona State. He was having himself a great freshman season going 7-1 until he was hurt against Nick Lee of Penn State.
