Four (Or More) Time State Champions in College = Ohio

When it comes to states that qualify as "wrestling states" in every which way you could categorize the term, the state of Ohio matches up. Of all of the four time state champions that Ohio has produced over the years, I could only find one that didn't go on to wrestle in college. Nearly all of them did and at a pretty successful level as well.

Mark Zimmer

Our first four time Ohio High School State champion was Mark Zimmer of St. Francis DeSales who won his titles between 76'-79'.  He began his collegiate career at Wisconsin, where as a true freshman in 1980 he made the BIG 10 finals & took 8th at the NCAA championships.  Transferring to Oklahoma, he would make the BIG 12 finals in 1982, taking 3rd in 1984 where he also earned his second All American honor of 7th place.

He was also a three time BIG 10 champion.

Jeff Jordan

Brother of Jim listed above, Jeff Jordan won four Ohio State High School Championships for St. Paris Graham from 80'-82'.  Also competing for Wisconsin in college, he was a two time All American in his junior & senior seasons of 1987 & 1988 taking 4th place finishes both years. He also won a BIG 10 title in 1988 as well.

Erik Burnett

Winning Ohio High School State titles from 84'-87' for Oberlin, Erik Burnett competed collegiately for Clarion. A three time NCAA qualifier, he was 5th at the 1992 NCAA championships as a senior.

Dan Hanson

Dan Hanson won four Ohio High School State championships from 84'-87' for Richmond Heights. He attended Wisconsin but his collegiate career was cut short due to a torn ACL.

Ken Ramsey

Ken Ramsey would win his first two Ohio High School State crowns for Fisher Catholic in 84' & 85', winning his last two for Bishop ready in 86' & 87'.  Collegiately he competed for Ohio State, where he was a two time All American, placing 5th as a junior in 1991 & 3rd as a senior in 1992. Johnny McGhee won four Ohio High School State titles from 93'-96' for Coventry. He began his career at Iowa Central where he won the 1998 NJCAA title. At the 1999 NJCAA championships, he suffered an injury that not only caused him to have to default to 6th place, but also kept him from continuing his collegiate wrestling career.

And would you guess that Ohio Four Timers are still rockin' it at the collegiate level?

Kaleb Romero of Mechanicsburg an All American last season is as Ohio State

Mitch Moore of St. Paris Graham who also competed at Virginia Tech before transferring to Oklahoma still has a year of eligibility left.

David Carr of Dayton Christian/Massillon Perry has already won a NCAA title for Iowa State. He has two years of eligibility left.

Dylan D'Emilio of Genoa Arca is at Ohio State, a two time NCAA qualifier with three years of eligibility left.

Once Ohio State figured out how to keep this horses in their own barn instead of letting them wander out to foreign pasture it made a huge difference in Buckeye wrestling results. Love to see Ohio, Cleveland State & Kent State pick up on a few more of these kids. If the wealth were distributed a bit more (understand all the ins and outs, just being euphoric for a minute) I wonder if this would have helped some of the other collegiate programs to have held on a bit longer.  Out of the 9 NCAA Division I programs that do not have varsity wrestling programs, all 9 of them did at one time. (Granted they were not all DI when they discontinued.)
