I wrote about Utah four time state champs not too long ago & I have to say I pretty much feel the same way about Virginia. Maybe even more so. A state that is never going to be thought of a "wrestling state" parse but certainly has produced some very good wrestlers.
Okla Johnson |
The first four time state champion for Virginia was Granby's Okla Johnson who won titles from 56'-59'. He wrestled collegiately for Michigan State where he was a two time All American. The NCAA runner-up as a junior in 1962, he was 6th in 1963.
Wayne Simons |
Wayne Simons won four Virginia High School State titles for Granby from 57'-60'. He wrestled collegiately for Oklahoma State where he was an NCAA runner-up in 1962.
David Martin |
Yet another Granby representative, David Martin won four Virginia High School State titles from 68'-71'. Collegiately he competed for the Sycamores of Indiana State where he was a four time NCAA qualifier.
Scott Conkwright |
Scott Conkwright won four Virginia High School State titles for Cox from 69'-72'. Collegiately he wrestled for North Carolina where he won an ACC title in 1977 as a senior.
Charles "Butch" Backus |
Butch Backus won four Virginia State High School championships for Poquoson from 71'-74'. From what I could find he did not wrestle in college.
John Davis |
John Davis won four Virginia High School State titles from 77'-80' for Maury. He competed for Morgan State where he was a four time NCAA Division II All American. After placing 6th as a freshman & 3rd as a sophomore he won back to back national titles.
Shane Bowman |
Mike Akers |
Mike Akers won four Virginia High School State titles for Poquoson from 96'-99'. He competed collegiately for Virginia Tech. He was an NCAA Qualifier.
Michael Martin |
Michael Martin won four Virginia High School State titles for Great Bridge from 99'-02'. He began his collegiate career at Illinois & then transferred to Old Dominion.
Albert Childress |
Albert Childress won four Virginia High School State titles for Grundy 00'-03'. He did not wrestle in college.
Daniel Frishkorn |
Another representative of Great Bridge, Daniel Frishkorn won four Virginia High School State titles from 00'-03'. He wrestled collegiately at Oklahoma State where he had a great start to his freshman season taking 4th in the nation. Unfortunately injuries would get the best of Frishkorn, forcing a premature end to his career.
B.J. Compton |
B.J. Compton of Christianbury won four Virginia High School State titles from 01'-04'. He thus far is the only four time state champion that I have ran across that wrestled in the USCAA (United States Collegiate Athletic Association) the league of college wrestling that it seems gets no attention from anyone. He competed for The Apprentice School.
Patrick Bond |
Yet another Great Bridge representative, Patrick Bond won four Virginia High School State titles from 02'-05'. He wrestled collegiately for Illinois, where he was a four time NCAA qualifier. Other highlights included a 5th place finish at CKLV as a sophomore, a 3rd place finish at the BIG 10's as a junior & a 6th place finish at the Midlands as a senior.
Matt Epperly |
Matt Epperly won four Virginia High School State titles from 03'-06' for Christianburg. He competed for Virginia Tech in college where he won ACC titles in 2008 & 2010.
Todd Smoot |
Cody Gardner |
The late Cody Gardner won four Virginia High School State titles from 04'-07' for Christianburg. He began his collegiate career at Virginia Tech, then transferring to Ohio State. He finished up at Delaware Valley.
Collin Dozier |
Winning four High School State titles for Cox from 04'-07', Collin Dozier wrestled for Michigan State collegiately.
Andrew Williams |
Winning four Virginia High School State titles for Tabb from 06'-09', Andrew Williams wrestled for a short amount of time at Virginia.
