Wrestling in Historically Black Colleges

From all of the information that I have been able to find, today their are 107 Historically Black Colleges/Universities in the United States.  This number was reported as of January of 2020 & I do believe that as a result of COVID-19 that number may be smaller.

It is also important to note that over the past 56 years, thirty-five Historically Black Institutions have permanently closed their doors.   Out of all Historically Black Colleges/Universities past & present this brings the total number to 142.

Most of the Historically Black Colleges/Universities never had a varsity wrestling program.  Only 19 of them ever did, & today only one remains.

Allen and Arkansas Baptist.   The YellowJackets and the Buffaloes are the only two HBCU's to have wrestling.

As to those who did....

Cheyney
Coppin State
Delaware State
Elizabeth City State
Florida A&M
Hampton (VA)
Howard
Huston-Tillotson
Lincoln (PA)
Lincoln (MO)
Maryland Eastern Shore
Morgan State
North Carolina A&T
Norfolk State
Shorter
South Carolina State
Virginia State
Winston-Salem

It is also important to note that out of all of the Historically Black conferences, two of them at one time sponsored wrestling & held an annual tournament.  Both the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) & The Mid-Eastern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MEAC) had wrestling.  The Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) & the Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) never sponsored wrestling.

For more information on the team & individual success of these programs ask.  Most of them I have already written articles on or they are scheduled for an article in the future.
