Gone, Lost & Forgotten: Their Best = North Dakota

There was a time within NCAA Division II wrestling one of the hottest rivalries was South Dakota State Vs North Dakota State.  The Jackrabbit/Bison feud was to NCAA Division II wrestling what Augsburg Vs Wartburg has been to NCAA Division III.  Often overlooked & forgotten within the state of North Dakota is just how good the University of North Dakota was as well.

During the late 80's up through the early 90's, North Dakota had six straight years of placing in the top seven at the NCAA Division II tournament including a high of third in 1990 & two fourth place finishes in 1987 & 1993.   For all intents and purposes even though North Dakota was at one time referred to as the Fighting Sioux, all wrestlers in this blog will be referenced as Fighting Hawks.

A two time state champion with a 67-0 record his last two years of high school, Knowlen began his career at Bismark Junior College (Another program we no longer have).  While competing for the Fighting Hawks, Knowlen captured NCAA Division II All American status on two occasions. He placed seventh in both 1983 & 1984.

Post college Knowlen took over the program at Bismark High School.  He posted 368 dual wins against only 16 losses.  145 duals were won in a row.   This included 15 traditional & 12 team state titles.
