Gone, Lost & Forgotten: Their Best = Winston-Salem State

An historically black college in North Carolina, the Rams of Winston-Salem State won the 1980 CIAA (Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association) team title.  The wrestling program was discontinued after the 1990-1991 season.

Horace Williams
142 lbs

Williams had an outstanding season in 1981 winning a CIAA title & taking eighth place honors at the NCAA Division II championships.

Willie Mouzon
158 lbs

Willie Mouzon was a two time CIAA champion for the Rams, earning NCAA Division II All American accolades in 1988 with an eighth place finish & in 1990 with a fifth place finish.  Post college he became a firefighter.

Donnell Rawls

Rawls had outstanding success during his time as  Ram.  After winning a CIAA title & taking seventh place honors at the NCAA Division II championships as a freshman in 1990, he would win a second CIAA title & capture an NCAA Division II title as a sophomore in 1991.  Transferring to Appalachian State after Winston-Salem discontinued their program , he won a Southern Conference title & took fourth place at the 1993 NCAA Division I championships.

Post college he wrestled  internationally for a while & once drove out to Las Vegas to compete in a tournament while sleeping in his car & showering at the gym. He took an unpaid volunteer assistant position at UNC-Greensboro (a program we no longer have) where he managed a pizza hut in order to pay the bills.
