During the time Liberty was varsity, they put together a dual meet record of 218-126 throughout time in both NCAA Division I & NCAA Division II as well as the NAIA. They also participated in the National Christian Colleges Athletic Association (NCCAA). At the Division I level their highest finish was thirty-second in 1991. In NCAA Division II they had their best run in the mid to late 80's, capturing fifth place in 1986, sixth place in 1987 & ninth place in 1988. They won five NCCAA titles between 1977 & 1981.
It was towards the end of Liberty's varsity status that the Flames began to claim hold at the Regional level, winning Eastern Regional titles in 2007, 2008 & 2009.

Putting together a career record of 85-22, Howard Johnson took All American honors for the Flames at the 1982 NAIA championships with a third place finish. He was also a two time NCCAA champion, winning titles in 1981 & 1982.

Shoemaker took third place All American honors at the 1983 NAIA championships.
Jesse Castro 142 lbs |
Jesse Castro had an outstanding career for the Flames going 101-20 during his illustrious four year career that was capped by a fourth place finish at the 1981 NAIA championships & four NCCAA titles in 77', 78', 79' & 81'. He later took over as head coach of Liberty, winning Coach of the Year honors in the Eastern Regional in 2007 & 2008.

Putting together a career record of 105-30, Ainscough was a two time All American at the NCAA Division II level. He finished in seventh place in 1985, taking runner-up honors in 1986.
Mike Hatch HWT, 190 lbs |
Mike Hatch made the NCAA Division II finals two years in a row in 1986 & 1987, ending his career with a record of 120-28.

Morris earned a third place All American honor at the 1987 NCAA Division II championships.
Kevin Frame 158, 167 lbs |
Putting together a record of 66-17, Frame earned All American honors at the NCAA Division II level in both 1987 & 1988, placing sixth & third respectively.
Warren Stewart 142 lbs |
Warren Stewart won an NCAA Division II title in 1988 as a sophomore. When Liberty transitioned into NCAA Division I status, he qualified for the NCAA championships in 1989 & 1990. He ended his career with a record of 73-16.
Craig Holiday 167 lbs |
Holiday was a two time Eastern Regional champion in 1990 & 1991 for the Flames, also claiming a fourth place finish at the Midlands Championships. After ending his career with a 65-15 record he went to work for UPS in St. Louis, Missouri.
Steve Derlan 150 lbs |
A two time state champion in high school, Derlan won two Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) titles for the Flames in 1991 & 1993. Taking a redshirt in 1992, he placed fourth at the Midlands tournament. When Derlan graduated from Liberty he carried a 3.6 GPA. He would later run in & have high finishes in marathons.

Bruce was a two time CAA champion for the Flames in 1992 & 1994, also placing sixth at the prestigious Midlands championships. He ended his career with a record of 95-26.
Christian Smith 125, 133 lbs |
Christian Smith may have ended his career with a record of 53-62 but when it came time to show up at the Eastern Regionals, he always did. A three time NCAA qualifier in 2007, 2008 & 2009, Smith also added two Academic All American honors to his resume graduating with a 3.6 GPA.

A three time Eastern Regional champion in 07, 08 & 09, Harner put together a career record of 94-37, graduating with a 3.3 GPA.
Chad Porter 165 lbs |
One of the best towards the end of Liberty's varsity status, Porter ended the Flames final Eastern Regional appearance in 2011 by becoming the school's sole four time champion. (He also won titles in 2007, 2008 & 2010). He ended his career with a record of 105-54.
Royal Bettrager 174 lbs |
A 2011 NCAA qualifier, Bettrager helped Liberty to immediate success at the NCWA level when the program was dropped from varsity to club status, when he earned All American in the NCWA tournament.
Scott Clymer 141 lbs |
An NCAA qualifier for the Flames, Clymer had a 53-40 record when Liberty dropped their varsity status. He became the Flames first NCWA champion the following season. Clymer later went on to success in the MMA.
Wayne Brooks 150 lbs |
Brooks took runner-up honors at the 1979 NCCAA championships.
Steve Iles 150 lbs |
Iles won an NCCAA title for the Flames in 1981.
