Gone, Lost & Forgotten: Their Best = Oakland

Varsity wrestling came to an end in Oakland after the 1984-1985 season.  While their have been a number of attempts to reinstate, they have all been to no avail.  In the mean time they were rather competitive as a club program in the NCWA.  They raised between $25,000 & $30,000 per year & many of their wrestlers received scholarship money to wrestle.  They're no longer listed on the NCWA website & I'm not sure what happened there.

Jerry Umin

From what I've been able to gather Umin was Oakland's greatest wrestler earning NCAA Division II All American honors twice in his career.   As a freshman he took fifth at the 1984 championships & as a sophomore in 1985 he finished in fourth.   His junior season he transferred to Eastern Michigan University & by his senior season of 1987 he won a Mid-American Conference title & took seventh place honors at the NCAA Division I championships.
