Four (Or More) Time State Champions in College = Delaware

Looking over the four time state champions out of the State of Delaware, I'm a little surprised that none of them (at least to my knowledge) ever competed for Delaware or Delaware State. Both the Blue Hens & the Hornets had wrestling for quite a long time. Delaware sponsored wrestling up through 1991-1992 & Delaware State had wrestling up through the 2008-2009 season.  Yet none of their four timers went to either school & looking throughout the history of Delaware high school wrestling in general, few of their best wrestlers went to either school.  I understand a lot of other factors go into it. Coaches, facilities, scholarship money, academics offered, ect.  However you'd think at least someone would have wanted to have represented their home state in their home state.  The bright side is, most of their four timers did wrestle in college.

Jim Terry

The first state wasted no time in crowning their first four time champion. The inaugural Delaware High School State Championships were held in the winter of 1957 & among their champions was Jim Terry of St. Andrews. Three years later he stood a top of the award stand for the fourth time in 1960 become the state's first four timer. From all that I have gathered he did not wrestle in college.

Kurt Howell

It'd be a long time before Delaware would crown another four time state champion, but when Kurt Howell of Newark won his fourth title in 1986, he did so going 108-0. He'd find himself competing for the Tigers of Clemson where he put together a 100-22 record highlighted by an ACC championship his junior year of 1990 & an NCAA DI All American finish of 8th his senior year in 1991.

Randy Brown

Competing for both Laurel as well as Delmar, the late Randy Brown (who passed away this past May) won his four titles from 84'-87'. From what I could find, he did not compete in college.

Sheldon Thomas

Winning four Delaware State titles for St Mark's from 89'-92', Sheldon Thomas had an outstanding career for the Clarion Golden Eagles.  Going 124-18, Thomas won three EWL titles & made All American status in those three years as well.  Winning a national title as a junior in 1996, he was 5th in 1995 & 3rd in 1997.

Damien Craighton

Winning four Delaware State titles for William Penn, Damien Craighton competed collegiately for Drexel.  Winning 100 matches for the Dragons, he was an NCAA qualifier his junior season in 1999.

Bruce Kelly

Kelly won his four Delaware State titles for St Mark's from 95'-98'.  He wrestled collegiately for Lehigh where he had a phenomenal start to his career placing 4th at the EIWA championships as a freshman, before winning an EIWA title as a true sophomore in 2000. Unfortunately knee injuries would keep him from reaching further success on the mat while a Mountain Hawk.

Andrew Donofrio

Another four time Delaware State champion from St. Mark's (98'-02'), Andrew Donofrio competed collegiately for Virginia Tech.

Sean Dolan

St. Mark's represented again. This time by four time champion Sean Dolan who won titles from 07'-10'.  As to his collegiate wrestling experience I'm not 100% sure what happened. I know at one time he was committed to compete at North Carolina State & I also know he was at Northwest Kansas Tech for a while as well. The specifics however remain a mystery at this point.

Codey Combs

Going 164-11 during his illustrious high school career, Combs won four Delaware State titles for Sussex County from 08'-11'. Collegiately he competed for both Arizona State & Clarion.

Brent Fleetwood

Winning four Delaware State titles for Smyrna from 11'-14', Fleetwood began his collegiate career competing for Central Michigan. While a Chippewa he took 3rd place honors at the MAC tournament in 2016 as a freshman. He would then finish up his career at North Dakota State where he made the BIG 12 finals as a senior in 2019. Altogether he had 83 career wins.

As of right now there are no four time Delaware State champions competing in college to my knowledge.
