Colorado State Mesa @ The 46th Annual Midwest Classic

The Mavericks may not be ranked as a team via theopenmat at the time being, but they certainly have some wrestlers who could have a very good tournament this weekend at the Midwest Classic.

U.R.
Dayson Torgerson
125

I'm trying to make sense out of Dayson Torgerson not currently being in the rankings.  5th at the Classic a year ago, he was also 7th in the D2 nation.  All I can figure is that he is redshirting.  Redshirts have participated in this tournament before, I'm pretty sure, so if Torgerson competes, he's a major threat here at 125 lbs.  Owns an 8-4 win over Quade Smith, 4-1 over Isaiah Gamez, 8-0 over Colton Drousias & 13-7 over Rhys Sellers.

U.R.
Alex Castaneda
149

Alex Castaneda is currently in a slump & I'll say two things about it.  1 - he was 4th at Super Region VI last season, one match away from NCAA D2 qualification.  2 - take a good look at Jett Strickenberger of West Virginia.  Look at how his season started out & look at where it is now.  In a matter of one week he went from getting majored by a lower ranked wrestler to winning Cliff Keen Las Vegas, NCAA DI's toughest in-season tournament.  Turnarounds can happen.

#3
Owen Cline
157

On paper, the Mavericks best bet for a place-winner this tournament is Owen Cline.  He was 4th in the NCAA D2 nation a year ago.

U.R.
Tyler Doyle
HWT

Here's another wrestler that for the life of me, I can't figure out why he's unranked.  7th both here as well as in the D2 nation a year ago, without a doubt, Tyler Doyle wrestles this tournament, he'll be in the hunt for a top 8 showing.  Has split thus far this season with Max Balow, both sudden victory matches.
