Who has the potential to walk away with a Southern Scuffle title at 133 lbs this weekend?
Who has the potential to make the Southern Scuffle finals?
Who has the potential to take home a top 8 finish from the Scuffle this weekend?
Let's take a look!!
#9 Dom Serrano Northern Colorado
The Bears suffered quite a blow when both Stevo Poulin & Vinny Zerban left Greely, Colorado for Ames, Iowa. Nevertheless, Northern Colorado still has one of their standout stars from last season & that guy is two-time Southern Scuffle runner-up Dom Serrano. Can Serrano add a gold to the two silvers he already owns? I'd say so. A likely *1 seed, he owns a 4-1 win over Ethan Oakley & a 14-10 win over T.K. Davis.
#11 Dillon Campbell Virginia Tech
Serrano is going to have plenty of wrestlers breathing down his neck this tournament & this talented freshman is one of them. Dillon Campbell has been having himself a great rookie season & has wins over both Braxton Brown (11-0) & Tyler Ferrera (1-0).
#12 Braxton Brown Maryland
The three-time NCAA DI qualifier is looking to add to his list of credentials & accomplishments and a top 8 showing here at the Scuffle would be a rather nice one to have on the resume. Owns a 6-2 decision over Ray Lopez.
#13 Tyler Ferrara Cornell
While current ranking may favor the Hokie, the head-to-head favors the Big Red, as the sophomore from Binghamton, owns an 8-1 decision over Dillon Campbell. He also owns an 11-3 major decision over Joey Fischer.
#14 Ethan Berginc Army
The three-time NCAA DI qualifier has plenty of reason to think he'll have a good weekend here at the Southern Scuffle. Among his wins, he's defeated T.K Davis three times (8-3, 9-6 & a 2:25 fall) & he's defeated Ray Lopez twice (9-1 & 9-5).
#16 Ray Lopez American
The Eagle is making the most out of his final season of competition. Winning the Navy Classic, he's already pulled off a few upsets this season & is looking to pull off more. He should be seeded to place at the Scuffle this weekend but will still need to wrestle well in order to make the award stand.
#19 T.K. Davis Gardner Webb
The Bulldog was 6th here a year ago & he owns a 6-3 decision over Braxton Brown and a 12-10 decision over Ray Lopez.
#18 Evan Mougalian Pennsylvania
Going to use the term, "Sneaky good" once again here to speak of Evan Mougalian & the potential he has this weekend. I don't think we've really seen him let loose yet & what a surprise it'll be to the wrestling community if he does.
#29 Tristan Daugherty North Dakota State
The Bison will be looking for a top 8 finish this weekend & stands a good shot at achieving that status.
#33 Javaan Yarbrough Morgan State
As Coach Kenny Monday continues to rebuild the once powerful & proud Morgan State wrestling program since its recent reinstatement, the Bears look for credentials & accomplishments to add to the program's accolades. Placing at the Southern Scuffle would be among them & Javaan Yarbrough gives them that opportunity at 133 lbs.
U.R. Joey Fischer Clarion
Now a senior, I cannot believe that as good as Joey Fischer sometimes wrestles, he has not made the NCAA DI championships yet. I know he's better than U.R. but at the moment, U.R. is where he stands. Does he have the talent & skill to pull off some upsets this weekend? He has the talent & skill to place top 8 this weekend. Owns both a 5-3 decision over Ethan Berginc & a 2-1 tiebreaker over Tristan Daughtery.
U.R. Carter Schmidt Oklahoma
Among the other unranked talent in this group with the potential to finish within the top 8, add Carter Schmidt to the list.
U.R. Geronimo Rivera Utah Valley
Starting off the season 0-5 and then nabbing a huge victory over All-American Zan Fugitt. It's hard to know what to make of Geronimo Rivera. Was it a sign of a slow start, now ready to hit the road running? Or was it simply a case of every dog has its day? We'll see this weekend at the Scuffle!!
