Again my objective here is to do my best to determine who among those competing this weekend are in the best positions to....
A - Win the Southern Scuffle
B - Make the Southern Scuffle Finals
C - Place within the top 8 at the Southern Scuffle
Here we go!
U.R. C.J. Composto Pennsylvania
I'm very anxious to see if C.J. Composto ends up wrestling this weekend or not. I didn't think we'd see him at all first semester & he showed up in the dual Vs Virginia earning a 6-5 decision over Gable Porter. Obviously, although he wasn't ranked, the two-time NCAA DI All-American will be soon enough & I would think he'll be the clear *1 seed this weekend if he does indeed wrestle.
#14 Braden Basile Army
5th here a year ago, Braden Basile is likely to have a very good seed when he enters the Southern Scuffle this weekend. Been rather impressive this year with a 5-4 win over Kyren Butler, both a 4-1 s.v. & a 7-6 decision over A.J. Rallo, and an 18-4 major over Luke Simcox.
#17 Haiden Drury Utah Valley
This is a guy that I've had a lot of belief in for a long time & I think recently making the award stand at CKLV with some big wins along the way has refueled the confidence tank moving forward. Not sure if Composto is within his league, but everyone else is. The Wolverine has what it takes to make the finals this weekend. Owns a 2-0 win over Tyler Wells.
#19 Luke Simcox Or U.R. Jayden Scott North Carolina
Interesting case here at North Carolina. Luke Simcox is currently the one with the ranking. Owns an impressive 5-3 decision over Tom Crook & a 1:57 fall over Tyson Sherlock. Yet, Jayden Scott made the Scuffle finals a year ago. Who among the Carolina blue & white, gets the start this weekend?
**NOTE** - Tar Heels are going BOTH Scuffle & Salute, so I'm gonna have to take a guess here. I'm saying Simcox Salute & Scott Scuffle.
It wasn't all that long ago, we were talking about Tom Crook as a potential All-American. A good weekend here at the Scuffle, we could once again be bringing his name back into the discussion.
Very much in the same boat at Tom Crook, Tyler Wells is a wrestler that has been in the discussion at a much higher # before, but has since slipped a bit. A former R12 wrestler at the NCAA's, he had a good 5th place showing at CKLV. Scuffle doesn't have quite the prestige that Vegas does, but there is still enough good talent within this bracket, that having a good weekend should reflect.
Talk about a guy that has made some major improvements between this year & last. I'd suspect Dario Lemus to have a seed somewhere between *6 & *8.
We spoke earlier of Cael Sanderson showing off his reserve and redshirt talent at the Scuffle & Nate Desmond, a current redshirt is one of them. The young Nittany Lion has impressive wins at both 125 & 141 lbs this year, having wrestled the latter more recently. As do most who don the blue & white, I suspect him to be impressive this weekend.
Vince Cornella recently returned to action with wins over Danny Pucino & Brennan Van Hoecke in duals against Illinois & Little Rock. I'm poised to think that he could very well be our starter here at the Scuffle. If he is, depending on whether we see C.J. Composto here or not, I would think Cornella would either be our *1 seed or our *2 seed. He's defeated Tom Crook on three occasions, 10-4, 4-2 & 12-4. Furthermore, he owns a 17-2 technical fall over Braden Basile, who could end up our *1 seed if both Cornella & Composto are not here to compete. If Cornella is not here, don't kid yourself, Saunders is still a threat in his own right. Owns a 4-2 decision over Haiden Drury.
The Cavalier was 6th here a year ago, looking to earn another medal this tournament.
7th here a year ago, the Knights A.J. Rallo owns a 3-1 decision over Tyson Sherlock.
I'm not 100% positive how many Scuffle place-winners the Wildcats have had over the years, but I do believe that Tyson Sherlock if he places this year, might become the first ever two-time place-winner. He was 8th a year ago.
My job being to try and determine who will be in the hunt for place-winner status this tournament, I feel compelled to add the name Jack Maida to those already listed.
**NOTE** - Tar Heels are going BOTH Scuffle & Salute, so I'm gonna have to take a guess here. I'm saying Simcox Salute & Scott Scuffle.
#20 Tom Crook Virginia Tech
