The premier in-season NCAA Division II tournament is here & this year JT1Wrestle decided to preview it a little differently. For the past 5 seasons, I have been previewing the tournament weight by weight. I decided to change things up this year & preview the tournament team by team.
I'm not here to talk about each & every single member of the team. I'm here to talk about the guys with the potential & the capability to make some noise at this tournament. The Midwest Classic in many ways is just as tough as the NCAA D2 national tournament & in the opinions of many, at times TOUGHER.
Who among the #21 Adams State Grizzlies can bring home a medal this season?
#4 Isaiah Gamez 125
Bring home a medal? You damn right Isaiah Gamez can bring home a Midwest Classic medal. He can bring home a gold medal. The two-time NCAA DII qualifier who was 4th in the D2 nation in 2024, was a silver medalist here a year ago. Who does he have wins over? It's more like who doesn't he have wins over. 8-6 over Trevon Gray, he stuck Shane Corrigan (4:06), Luke Acuna (6:19), Quade Smith (6:09), & Josh Jasionowicz (6:00). Plus he owns a 4-0 decision over Colton Drousias.
U.R. Jakob Romero 133
I'm not sure why Jakob Romero is currently not in the rankings. A second semester transfer from Utah Valley, He qualified for the NCAA DII championships last season. Owns an 8-4 win over James Davis & a 4-2 win over J.J. Armstrong. Could possibly be redshirting.
#19 Kieran Thompson Or U.R. John Provencio 141
Kieran Thompson who competed at 149 lbs last season currently holds the ranking at 141 lbs for the Grizzlies. Wins over multiple time All-American Dean Noble as well as Daniel DeRosier suggest he could have a good tournament. So could John Provencio, who has yet to lose a collegiate wrestling match competing at the NCAA DII level. 20-0 last year, owns a 9-2 win over Quade Smith.
#11 Angel Flores 149
An NCAA DII All American in 2024 (4th) Angel Flores returns to action after taking a redshirt this past season. Looking to climb that rankings ladder & return to All-American form, there be no better place to do so than Indianapolis.
#6 Aaden Valdez 165
Another Grizzly returning from hibernation, Aaden Valdez is a two time Super Region VI champion, 7th in the D2 nation in 2024. Again, in the world of D2 wrestling, there be not a better place to announce your comeback during the in-season than the Midwest Classic.
U.R. Dallas Porter 174
Starting off in NCAA DIII & then an NJCAA qualifier for Otero, Dallas Porter was 5th at Super Region VI last year. A 10-3 win over Logan Berger suggest to me that he could score some valuable points in this prestigious tournament.
#19 Ben Tonnessen 197
Ben Tonnessen is an a wrestler with an interesting background. Started off I believe wrestling for Pike's Peak Community College which is a club team. All in all, he makes a total of 7 Grizzlies in the opinion of JT1Wrestle capable of making some noise this weekend!
