2022: The Preseason: Campbell Camels

Second year head coach Scotti Sentes looks to have a strong finish to his rookie season as the leader of the Camels. I see five national qualifiers, two of which have a shot at All America status and all 5 that could walk out of the Southern Conference champions.

125
Zurich Storm OR Korbin Meink
Junior Or Senior
NCAA: 21'NQ OR 19'NQ, 20'NQ
SOCON: 21'2nd OR 19'1st, 20'1st
SOUTHERN SCUFFLE: OR 18'4th
RENO: OR 20'1st

Storm was unable to figure out Appalachian State's Codi Russell last season & Meink has never faced Russell. I think either way, either one of these guys is 2nd or 3rd at worst in the SOCON.  As to the other competition in the conference, Storm is 2-1 Vs Chattanooga's Fabian Gutierrez and Meink is 2-3 against him.   As to the NCAA's both Storm and Meink have shown signs of being All American caliber.  Storm owns victories over All Americans Patrick McKee of Minnesota, Sam Latona of Virginia Tech & Killian Cardinale of West Virginia.  Meink owns a victory over NCAA finalist Zeke Moisey of West Virginia as well as two time BIG 10 runner-up Devin Schroder of Purdue.

I'm not sure if either one of these guys has the size to be competitive at 133 lbs, but it would be nice to think that whoever doesn't win this wrestle-off might be able to move up in order to give the Camels another NCAA qualifier.

149
Josh Heil
Senior
Record: 94-36
NCAA: 17'NQ, 19'NQ, 20'NQ, 21'NQ
SOCON: 17'1st, 19'1st, 20'1st, 21'2nd
RENO: 18'4th, 20'1st
SOUTHERN SCUFFLE: 18'2nd
CKLV: 19'6th
MIDLANDS: 20'2nd

A rather decorated career, the one thing left for Heil to do is to earn a medal at the NCAA tournament. Many feel he might have if not for a controversial loss to 4th place Boo Lewallen of Oklahoma State. Within the Southern Conference, he'll have Jonathan Millner of Appalachian State to contend with for a title. The two should meet at least twice this season if not more times. Look for each meeting to be an exciting one.

174
Austin Murphy
Junior
Record: 34-21
NCAA: 21'R12
SOCON: 21'1st
SOUTHERN SCUFFLE: 20'R12

I don't see Murphy having any struggle whatsoever in capturing a second SOCON title this season. I look for him to be very dominative within the conference.  As to the NCAA's he was only a match away from All American status last season, but I'm going to have to see him win a few matches or at least be more competitive in them against top 8 competition before I see him as an All American.  Will reevaluate again mid-season.

184
Caleb Hopkins
Sophomore
Record: 46-27
NCAA: 21'NQ
SOCON: 21'1st

I could possibly see Chattanooga's Matt Waddell challenging Hopkins for the SOCON title this season, but I'm not giving it a high probability.  Hopkins defeated the Moc twice last season by identical scores of 5-2. Hopkins should be another SOCON champion for the Camels.

197
Chris Kober
Senior
Record: 66-31
NCAA: 19'NQ, 21'NQ
SOCON: 19'1st, 21'1st

Like Murphy, I can't see anyone giving Kober any trouble at all in the SOCON this season.  Another conference title for the Camels at 197.

====

125 - All American
133 - DNQ
141 - DNQ
149 - All American
157 - DNQ
165 - DNQ
174 - NQ
184 - NQ
197 - NQ
HWT - DNQ

I think 5 in the SOCON finals, all 5 with a shot at winning a title.  Two plausible All Americans. Pretty good year for Campbell.
