2022: The Preseason: Army Black Knights

I see up to 7 NCAA qualifies with 2 in contention for EIWA titles and 1 in the hunt for All American status.

133
Mark Montgomery
Sophomore
Record: 7-6

With wins such as a 6-4 victory over Darren Miller of Bucknell & a 6-3 decision over Jacob Allen of Navy, Mark Montgomery stands a very good shot at qualifying for this year's NCAA's.

141
Corey Shie OR Logan Brown
Senior OR Junior
Record: 67-33 OR Record: 29-23
NCAA: 19'NQ OR
EIWA: 19'4th, 20'7th OR
MIDLANDS: 19'6th OR

The starter here is going to be Corey Shie, I'm almost positive of that. In competition, Shie scored a fall in a little over a minute against Brown. It's simply that Logan Brown, with such wins as a 6-5 decision over Lehigh's Ryan Pomrinca illustrate that Shie has a pretty decent backup pushing him in the room.   Shie qualified for the NCAA's as a freshman & has yet to make it back.  Yet I think he does this season.  Notable wins that stick out include a 20-4 technical fall over 8th place All American Clay Carlson of South Dakota State as well an an 8-6 victory over Sam Turner an NCAA Division II All American who wrestled originally for Wyoming. Within the EIWA, based on mainly competition that he has not wrestled yet, I can't see Shie finishing any lower than 5th this season.

149
P.J. Ogunsanya
Senior
Record: 67-39
NCAA: 21'NQ
EIWA: 19'6th, 20'5th, 21'1st

After finishing one match away from NCAA qualification as a freshman & sophomore, winning the EIWA title last season he could not be denied.  With the return of Cornell's Yianni Diakomihalis & Anthony Artalona of Pennsylvania, winning another EIWA title is probably out of the question.  A high finish of 3rd however, is not. He'll have to contend with Lehigh's Jimmy Hoffman for that honor.  Interestingly enough, the rankings always seem to favor Hoffman in that matchup, even though Ogunsanya is 3-2 vs the Mountain Hawk, including upending him for the EIWA title last season.  While Ogunsanya strikes me as too inconsistent to make the top 8 at the NCAA's, he does own an impressive 11-6 victory over R12 Josh Finesilver of Duke.

157
Markus Hartman
Senior
Record: 56-18
NCAA: 20'NQ, 21'NQ
EIWA: 20'3rd, 21'WC
MIDLANDS: 20'2nd

There's a bit of parity here in the EIWA that may have placings come down to seeding. Hartman has proven that he can defeat Quincy Monday of Princeton, as he defeated the Tiger 4-2 sudden victory.  Yet he did not look good in an 8-2 loss to Josh Humphreys of Lehigh, who is 3-2 vs Monday overall.  Add in last year's EIWA champion Holden Heller, who Hartman is 2-1 against, and we have ourselves quite a war for the EIWA title.  Nevertheless, on a good day, Hartman is an EIWA champion.  With wins like the 15-2 dismantling he displayed over Mike Van Brill of Rutgers, Hartman displays himself as an All American hopeful as well.

174
Ben Pasiuk
Sophomore
Record: 15-4
NCAA: 21'NQ
EIWA: 21'1st

An EIWA champion a year ago, Pasiuk will defend his title this season from competition from Michael O'Malley of Drexel & Sage Heller of Hofstra.

197
J.T. Brown
Senior
Record: 61-24
NCAA: 20'NQ, 21'NQ
EIWA: 20'4th, 21'2nd
MIDLANDS: 20'7th

I don't see Brown defeating Ben Darmstadt of Cornell, but there isn't anyone else in the EIWA bracket  that Brown can't defeat. Jake Koser of Navy could give him fits, but thus far Brown is 2-0 vs the Midshipmen.  NCAA wise, Brown's best victory do date is a 4-3 decision over R12 Tom Lane of Cal Poly.

HWT
Ben Sullivan
Senior
Record: 52-30
NCAA: 20'NQ
EIWA: 20'WC

Now that Bobby Heald has graduated, Sullivan finally gets the HWT class all to himself.  While I don't see him defeating Lehigh's Jordan Wood or Harvard's Yaraslau Slavilouski, I see no reason why he can't finish 3rd in the EIWA.  Thus far he's 3-0 Vs Hofstra's Zachary Knighton-Ward & he's looked in control each of those three matches.

141 - NQ
149 - NQ
157 - All American
165 - DNQ
174 - NQ
184 - DNQ
197 - NQ
HWT - NQ

With all of the restrictions, variables and obstacles that Head Coach Kevin Ward is up against, I'd say that he's doing a Hell of a job proving that a guy can coach despite having never been an All American himself.  I think two possible EIWA champs, an EIWA runner-up & two others that can finish as high as 3rd helps to put that antiquated belief to rest.
