With the departure of Fresno State from the wrestling community, the west coast, in particularly California could use some more (Stanford reinstating was very positive) positivity and I think there's a chance it might come from Cal Poly. The last time the Mustangs crowned an NCAA Division I champion was in 1976. Here we are some 46 years later & they have an opportunity to crown one again.
141 Lawrence Saenz Sophomore Record: 30-23 NCAA: 20'NQ BIG 12: 20'6th |
Speaking of Fresno State, Lawrence Saenz is a welcomed addition to the Mustang lineup. An NCAA qualifier in 2020, Saenz most likely would have qualified again in 2021 had it not been for an injury. With the PAC-12 conference, look for Saenz to finish 3rd behind Grant Willits of Oregon State and Real Woods of Stanford.
Be it darkhorse, I think Legend Lamer has a shot at being an NCAA All American. He does own a 4-3 victory over Stanford's Jaden Abas, whom along with Arizona State's Kyle Parco, Lamer will contend with for a PAC-12 title. This will be a fun weight in the PAC-12 with these three going at it. To my knowledge Cal Poly has never had a four time DI All American. Lamer has that ability.
If 149 lbs looks interesting in the PAC-12, I'd say 165 is better. Evan Wick owns a victory over Alex Marinelli of Iowa and he owns two victories over Logan Massa of Michigan. I would say that makes him a contender for the NCAA title. With that said, he's got his hands full trying to win a PAC-12 title with Shane Griffith of Stanford and Anthony Valencia of Arizona State also gunning for the title. Three guys that could win a PAC-12 title and three guys that could win an NCAA title. Pretty exciting. Wick winning an NCAA title for the Mustangs, I think would do Cal Poly, the state of California and the West coast a world of good. California has lost so much in terms of wrestling. The state needs something like this in my opinion.
He made tremendous improvements between his freshman and sophomore seasons, and it'll be fun to see how much Bernie Truax improves between the "free be" sophomore year and this "second" sophomore year. He's up a weight, and I want to see him against the competition at 184 lbs, but I still think he's both PAC-12 champion material and All American material.

4 NCAA qualifiers, 3 of which I can see being All Americans and one with a shot at the national title? I think that's a pretty good showing for one of the smaller DI schools.
149 Legend Lamer Freshman Record: 24-8 NCAA: 21'NQ PAC 12: 21'2nd |
