2022: The Preseason: Kent State Golden Flashes

I can see the Golden Flashes having up to 4 NCAA qualifiers this season.

125
Jake Ferri
Junior
Record: 59-44
NCAA: 21'NQ
MAC: 21'3rd

A few variables to take into consideration when evaluating exactly where Jake Ferri might end up this season. If Central Michigan's Drew Hildebrandt is returning, Ferri is 0-3 against the Chippewa.  If he's not returning, that poses very good for the Golden Flash.  Ferri is 1-1 with Logan Heil of Cleveland State having defeated the Viking 8-6, but lost to him 7-4.  Ferri defeated both Jonathan Tropea of Rider and Luke Werner of Lock Haven by scores of 14-9 & 9-5 respectively.   He has never faced Willy Girard of Bloomsburg & that's a match that could come down 100% to whether Girard is healthy or not.  So like I said, a lot to sift through.  All things considered in Ferri's favor, he could win a MAC title.

133
Louis Newell
Sophomore
Record: 16-19

At 4-6 at 133 lbs, Newell hasn't looked all that great yet, but with the shortened season last year, he hasn't really had a chance to yet either.  While competing at 125 lbs, he did have some notable wins including a 10-5 victory over Antonio Mininno of Drexel and an 11-8 decision over Joey Melendez of North Carolina.   He wins matches of that caliber at 133, we're looking at an NCAA qualifier.

149
Kody Komara
Junior
Record: 58-58
NCAA: 21'NQ
MAC: 21'4th

Komara has two things going from him as he enters the 2021-2022 season.  MAC champion Brock Mauller now competes in the BIG 12 & he owns a 2:29 fall over MAC runner-up Marcus Robinson of Cleveland State.  On the downside he is 0-2 Vs Anthony Celoni of Northern Illinois and he is 0-1 vs Alec Hagen of Ohio.  Then to add to the madness George Mason's Alex Madrigal is bumping up from 141 lbs.  A schedule should allow for most of these match-ups to happen twice.  Getting a win over said opponents at the MAC's to place higher would be ideal, but beating them in dual competition will also be crucial.  As long as he gets some important victories, even a 5th place finish should qualify him to the NCAA's.

184
Colin McCracken
Junior
Record: 63-53
NCAA: 21'NQ
MAC: 21'WC

I was rather surprised when I saw that McCracken was moving down to 184 lbs this season.  He's competed at both 184 and 197 & frankly I feel that he has had a better showing at 197.  They know much more than I do, so I'll trust the decision, but I'm not grasping for straws when I say that McCracken has had some very nice wins at 197.  He didn't have the best MAC tournament last season, but overall he's defeated MAC runner-up Ben Smith on four occasions. Owns an 11-9 victory over Michigan State's Cam Caffey and he's beaten J.J. Dixon of Oregon State, Drew Phipps of Bucknell, Jeron Smith of Maryland, Sam Schuyler of Buffalo and Gage Bruan of Northern Illinois.  Hope to see him have those types of wins & an NCAA qualification at 184.
