JT1Wrestle Takes A Look At Northern Oklahoma (Tonkawa) 2026-2027

 

I had no doubt in my mind that under the leadership of Brian Kenney, that the Mavericks of Northern Oklahoma (Tonkawa) were going to make some vast improvements.  Year one, one NJCAA qualifier.  Last season? 7 NJCAA qualifiers. Now that Kenney has departed to become a part of the inevitable success that awaits at NCAA DI Northeastern State, it leaves a great void of vacancy in Tonkawa. I know how important wrestling is to the community, so I have no doubt they are looking for a quality replacement. As of the time this was written, one has not be found yet. 

Only two of last year's qualifiers return & have not heard or read anything as far as where the five sophomore qualifiers from last year will end. 

As to our two returners....

John Marriott

The Katy, Texas native was an interesting case las season.  Had a very bad day at the South Central District, but was selected for NJCAA qualification as a wildcard. Something must have clicked within in once he crossed the border from Omaha into Council Bluffs, Iowa.  He damn near made All-American status, finishing one match shy of a top 8 showing.

Tyzel Zachry finished 4th in the South Central District last season.

Three NJCAA qualifiers last season & all three are now out of eligibility. Not sure where North Central District champ Kale Geiser is going to end up.  No word on the Jackson brothers, Qilee & Avant, both North Central District runner-ups, either. 

JT1Wrestle Takes A Look At Northwest College 2026-2027

 

The Trappers of Northwest College are looking forward to another great season of NJCAA wrestling. Sometimes the best way to look ahead is to start by looking behind.  Northwest College has had a habit of wrestlers making vast improvements between freshmen & sophomore year.  Zach Covolo R12 in 2025 & 3rd in the NJCAA nation in 2026, is evidence enough of that.  Have yet to hear where Covolo is heading, nor is their any information regarding 3rd in the NJCAA Asa Fayzullaev.  2026 NJCAA champ Austin Richens (also 3rd in 2025) will test himself among NCAA DI competition as he guns for a starting position at Purdue.

Dylan Sorensen was 3rd in the Plains District last season.

Devin Grossman had to rely on a wildcard selection to get into the NJCAA championships last season but will look to contend for a better position this season.

The Washington native was 3rd in the Plains District & one match shy of being an NJCAA All-American last season.

The Utah native is in a very similar situation to teammate Devin Grossman, as he too will look to improve upon his wildcard status from last season.

The Hawaiian was 3rd at last year's Plain District.

I expect some big things out of the Trappers this season. As previously mentioned, Northwest College has proven themselves with freshman to sophomore transitions many times in the past, and I expect '26-'27 to be no different. 

JT1Wrestle Takes A Look At Onodaga 2026-2027

 

What a fun, rewarding and exciting season it was for Onondaga Lazer wrestling last season.  Crowning six NJCAA qualifiers, the Lazers celebrated their first two-time qualifier in Enver Bulatov & their first ever NJCAA national champion in Charlie Foster.  Not sure where either is going to end up, but I'm very excited about Foster's future.  He won both the Messiah Open & the New York States last year, beating up on two-time NCAA D3 qualifier Konrad Parker. 

Lots of returning talent.

Matt Dougherty was 3rd at the Northeast District last season.

Another 3rd place finisher at last year's Northeast District, Mike Boyhan also finished 3rd at the New York States.

Venom yields a 5th place finish at last year's Plains District championships.  Dominic Sanchez will look to improve upon that finish. 

JT1Wrestle Takes a Look at Patrick & Henry 2026-2027

 

2025-2026 was a rough year for the Patriots, as they saw no NJCAA qualifiers. Yet in the world of NJCAA wrestling things can turn for the better in the blink of an eye.  The Patriots qualified 5 to both the 2023 & 2024 NJCAA tournaments.  No doubt about it, the potential for such greatness lies ahead.

Zach Gomer

The relatively new program produced two NJCAA qualifiers from last season & they return one of them.  South Carolina native Zach Gomer was 4th at last year's Gulf Atlantic District.
