It's been quite the transition for the LIU sharks. A rich program throughout the 60's, 70's & 80's that produced 15 All Americans, it was dropped after the 1987-1988 season. Restored in the 2014-2015 season, they found immediate success at the NCAA Division II level, crowning Joe Calderone a three time All American. In 2019, the bumped up to NCAA Division I. They have yet to qualify anyone to the NCAA championships, but they have two wrestlers on their team, that I think stand a shot at NCAA qualification this season.
125 Bryce Cockrell Freshman Record: 4-5 |
I think Cockrell could find himself an NCAA qualifier for the Sharks this season. He owns a 7-4 victory over NCAA qualifier Antonio Mininno of Drexel.
141 Drew Witham Freshman Record: 5-8 EIWA: 21'6th |
A match away from NCAA qualification last season, Witham strikes me as another candidate for NCAA qualification. He took Binghamton's Zack Trampe to a 5-4 decision.

141 - NQ
The Sharks have thus far had a rough go of it at the NCAA DI level and it'd be rewarding to see one of these two if not both of them make the NCAA tournament this season. A program's first NCAA DI qualifier is always a huge deal. Would be great for the program.
