Gone, Lost & Forgotten: Their Best = William & Mary








The Tribe was a competitive team throughout their history on the mat. While in the Southern Conference, William & Mary won team titles in 1968, 1969, 1970, 1971 & 1977.  After moving to the EIWA in the 1979-1980 season, William & Mary finished in the top half of a sixteen team tournament eight of the next twelve seasons.  A highest finish of fourth in 1990, their last season of 1990-1991, The Tribe finished in sixth place with four NCAA qualifiers.  One Champion & three thirds. 


Mark Belknap
134 lbs
Forced to find a new home after the University of Tennessee dropped its wrestling program, Belknap found himself at William & Mary.  While competing for the Tribe he won three Southern Conference titles, being named the outstanding wrestler in 1973 & 1975.  During the 1975 season he was selected to represent the East as he defeated Northern Iowa's Jim Miller (who went on to coach at Wartburg) in the All Star dual.  A two time All American, Belknap finished in fifth place in 1974 & in third place in 1975.
Bob Hobson 
A four time Southern Conference champion, Hobson was named the outstanding wrestler of the tournament his freshman year of 1968.

Lonnie Parker
Another four time Southern Conference champion for the Tribe, Lonnie Parker was named the outstanding wrestler of the tournament in 1971.

Thierry Chaney 
The Tribe's greatest star during William & Mary's time in the EIWA, Chaney won conference titles in 1988 & 1991, being named the outstanding wrestler in both tournaments.  He put together a record of 101-37.



Greg Giordano
Giordano was a three time Southern Conference champion for the Tribe winning titles in 1968, 1970 & 1971
Wrestling Hall of Famer
Tom Dursee
While wrestling for the Tribe, Tom Dursee put together 127 victories winning Southern Conference titles in 1976 & 1977.  He later went on to teach high school science, coach and officiate in the state of Georgia.


Rob Lamore 
After finishing aa the EIWA runner up as a junior in 1989, Lamore would win the title in 1990 as a senior.  He placed sixth at the NCAA championships that year as well.  A two time Midlands place-winner, Lamore finished in fourth as a junior and in fifth as a senior. 

Russell "Buzz" Wincheski 
Wincheski finished third at the EIWA championships his sophomore & junior seasons before finally capping of his senior campaign with a title.  That season he also placed sixth at the prestigious Midlands.
