Gone, Lost & Forgotten: Their Best = Weber State

I've always found Utah to be an interesting state when it comes to the sport of wrestling.  The Wrestling community doesn't think of Utah as a wrestling state & within our discussions Utah rarely comes up.  Yet we've had some great wrestlers come from Utah.  Matter of fact, our best.  Four time undefeated NCAA champion Cael Sanderson. He's not the only one either. His brothers Cody, Cole & Cyler were pretty good.  NCAA champ Aaron Holker is from Utah as is two time NCAA Runner-up Ryan Lewis.

Even more bizarre is the fact that had it not been for all of the teams that have dropped wrestling over the years, Utah would have six NCAA Division I programs.  Utah Valley which fields a program today would be joined by Utah, Utah State, Brigham Young, Southern Utah & the team I'll be covering today, Weber State.   Not bad for a state that isn't particularly known for its high school wrestling.

JOHN WEBB
Also a wrestler for the University of Wyoming it wasn't so much what Webb did on the mat himself as much as it was what he did when he took over as head coach that sticks out. Under his tutelage, the Wildcats saw their most successful moments.  They won the 1981 & 1983 BIG SKY conference team titles, which also lead Webb to being named the conference coach of the year.  During his time at Weber State he coached twenty-one BIG SKY individual champions & three All Americans.  The only All Americans in Weber State history.   After the wildcats discontinued wrestling, Webb was an assistant at both Oklahoma State & Brigham Young.

Mike Isom
126 lbs
Isom was a three time NCAA qualifier for the wildcats making the NCAA tournament in 1975, 76' & 77'.

Dave Lundskog
134, 142, 150 lbs
A Utah native out of New Brighton, Lundskog came to Weber State after winning a state championship in 1979. The Wildcats sole four time NCAA qualifier, Lundskog made history in a variety of ways when he captured an eighth place finish at the 1984 NCAA championships. Not only did he become Weber State's first All American, he became the first Utahan to ever earn All American status in wrestling at the Division I level.

Gary "Tiny" Scriven
134 lbs
Weber State's second All American, Scriven placed eighth at the 1983 NCAA championships.

Ryan Western
190 lbs
Weber State's third and final All American Ryan Western captured an eighth place finish at the 1985 NCAA championships.
