3rd in the D3 nation in 2024, Mark Samuel won a national title this past season. Also a champion at the prestigious Pete Willson Invitational, thus far Samuel has been 6th-3rd-3rd at Regionals & 2nd-2nd in the past two Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) championships. He went 30-3 on the year.

A 7-13 record as a freshman, Shaun Quirk really turned things around last season going 30-12 overall. Among those 30 wins, Quirk seemed to have Drew Loniewski's number defeating the Mule on three occasions. A 12-1 major decision, followed up by a 4:33 fall, Quirk actually defeated Loniewski 10-5 early on at Regional 3. Unfortunately he would lose to him 7-6 in the match to qualify. A runner-up at both the Racich Rumble & the MAC.

19 wins on the year, the Goodyear, Arizona native finished one win shy of NCAA Division III qualification last season. Among those 19 wins a 3:18 fall over qualifier Sean O'Toole & an 11-6 decision over qualifier Drew Loniewski.

Another NWCA Scholar All-American, this time we're talking about the UAA rookie of the year, Tyler Kadish who took runner-up honors at the UAA tournament. Along withs these accomplishments, Kadish also won titles at the Racich Rumble & Ned McGinley. 5th at Regional 3, he won 27 matches in total, 19 coming via bonus points.
A transfer of NAIA William Penn, Sabri Sino won 21 matches last season & captured a 5th place finish at Regional 5.
A wrestler with some boxing skills, Ty Trickle won 15 matches in '24-'25 & placed 6th at Regional 1.
A 15 win season for Ryan Santiago last season, who was 6th at Regional 2.
A 24-8 season for Brendan Callahan, who finished 6th at Regional 3. Among his wins, he defeated Drew Loniewski twice by scores of 14-11 & 10-7.
We talk about sleepers a lot in this sport at this level, and we could be looking at one here. All in all, Evan Onstad won 29 matches last season & collected medals everywhere he went. A Concordia (WIS) open runner-up, he was 3rd in the WIAC, 4th at Pete Willson & 5th at Roger Williams. Among his notable victories, a 17-14 decision over All-American Tommy Thongseng & a 12-11 decision over R12'er Haden Myers.
An Arkansas native, I once drove past his high school years ago when they did not have a wrestling program. Now they do, and they're producing collegiate wrestlers. A positive for our sport as we look forward. Zander Payne was one match shy of a top 8 showing at Pete Willson last season & he finished 6th in Regional 6.
A 24 win season for Jake Penzato last season, which included an 8-4 decision over Sean Conway the NCAA Division III runner-up. Penzato took 6th at Regional 7.
An NCAA Division III qualifier in 2024 with a runner-up finish at Regionals, things didn't go as good for Gabe Goss last year, as he finished in 7th place. With that said, Goss went 18-2 on the season, winning a SUNY-AC title.
Garrett Gehr finished 7th at Regional 3 last year.
Koen Eberhard finished 7th at Regional 5 last year.
A transfer from the now defunct Iowa Wesleyan, Gaige Owens won 24 matches on the season, placing 7th at Regional 6.
20 wins in '24-'25, Finn Bloomquist earned 7th place finishes at Regional 7 & at Pete Willson.
16 wins on the year, Jaden Friel placed 8th at Regional 2.
17 wins on the year, Ridge Barkley was 8th at Regional 4.
15 wins in '24-'25 for Mike Kallimani, who was 8th at Regional 5.
The Wildcats ended up going with Jake Eckerle last season as the starter, but it's likely that Cam Soda would've done every bit as good or maybe even better. An Ithaca Invitational champion & 3rd at the New Standard Invite, Soda went 19-2 on the year, winning a 4-0 match over qualifier Sam Kotch.
Behind two-time NCAA DIII qualifier Sam Lorenz last season, I would easily call Talan Schutte one of the best backups in the D3 nation in '24-'25. A WIAC champion last year, he is a two-time Pete Willson place-winner with finishes of 4th & 3rd. Scored a major decision over D3 finalist Sean Conway 15-7.
An NCAA Division III qualifier in 2023 & a MAC champion in 2024 with a 31-5 record, Nico Diaz sat out last season & will be making his return in '25-'26. Diaz is also a two-time NWCA Academic All-American.
The Anchorman put together 15 wins last season & finished one match shy of a top 8 finish at Pete Willson.
Jackson Maby unfortunately ended up getting injured at Regional 2 & had to medically forfeit out of the tournament. Had a good season up to that point though, going 24-3.
28 wins on the season for Andrew Schaen, one of which was a 7-3 decision over Drew Loniewski.
Here's another sleeper I'm keeping my eye on this season. Josh Robison is heading into his senior season having yet to be varsity for the Cardinals of North Central. He was behind two-time All American Bradly Rosen, who finished 3rd in the D3 nation last year. Robison has done some notable things in his career, including collecting three medals from D3's most prestigious in-season tournament. Pete Willson finishes of 4th-8th-2nd. Anxious to see what he can do this winter.
