Nashville, Tennessee, one of our beautiful southern communities. A lot of reasons to visit the Volunteer state's biggest city, one of them being a love for country music. Another? The Gator Boot Duals on Saturday December 18th, which will feature some great wrestling at the NCAA Division III level.
Here are some of the top matches to look forward to throughout the duals.
The Ozarks Nathan Rankin, a native of Texas is the man to beat here but I really, really hope that Ozarks takes on Loras as well as Luther in these duals because I want to see both go at it with Rankin. In the NWCA DIII's last season Hensley took 7th place All American honors & Chavez took 6th. Hensley owns both a 13-4 major decision and a 5-3 decision against Augustan's Ellex Williams. Jake Mora of Elmhurst recently squeaked by Williams 7-6. Look forward to that rematch if Augustana wrestles Elmhurst.
A battle of freshman here as Gabriel Brandenburg, a Missouri state qualifier takes on Javon Taschuck a four time state qualifier from Minnesota. If the Ozarks duals UW-Eau Claire, this will be a good match.
Seems like just about everyone that wrestled in the NWCA DIII nationals last season gets a little * put next to their name with an explanation of how not all of the DIII teams were in participation. Everyone that is, except for Elmhurst's Jimmy McAullife. The rankers know how good the 2021 champ is. He could very well end up having his toughest test at the Gator Boot Duals in #2 Jake Dado if Elmhurst duals Ozarks. Dado a transfer from The Citadel has thus far mowed through the DIII competition. He has two losses on his record, but both are to DI competition, including one against NCAA DI champion hopeful Jaydin Eierman of Iowa. In DIII it's 15 victories including five falls, three majors and one tech.
I hope to see Loras' Jalen Schropp get an opportunity against both McAullife and Dado. I grew up around Schropp's family. Used to play one of his relatives in youth baseball every summer & not sure what the relation is but Nick Schropp who ended up 5th at the Iowa High School State championships in 2003, I'd see at tournaments all the time. Schropp was 6th at the NWCA DIII's last season.
If Loras ends up dualing UW-Eau Claire, this will be a good one. Ruiz, a transfer from CCCAA Fresno City was 7th at the NWCA DIII's last season. Drexler, was an NCAA DIII qualifier in 2020, who has 51 victories against 18 losses.
It's hard to believe that Schmidt hasn't even made a trip to the NCAA DIII tournament yet. I guess with all the lunacy that has been COVID-19 that makes sense. Nevertheless, not only do I think Schmidt qualifies this year, I think he makes All American status. He'll get one Hell of a test this Saturday if UW-Eau Claire duals Loras. His opponent will be Gabe Fiser, who finished 4th at the NWCA DIII's last season. These types of dual tournaments usually have a bunch of mats, with a bunch of matches going on at the same time. I'll telling you that if UW-Eau Claire takes on Loras, you'll want your focus on this 165 lbs match.
Krakow is a two time NCAA DIII All American placing 8th in 2019 & 3rd last season at the 2021 NWCA DIII duals. On paper Krakow is heavily favored, but I'll tell you why this match interest me. It was Stricker's match with Brennan Swafford of Iowa. He took the two time NAIA champion to an 8-6 match. This alone, tells me that he'll give Krakow a match.
Honestly the Gator Duals is going to provide a ton of great wrestling, but these are the matches to look for in particularly.

Johnnythompsonnum1 at the time does not and plans on never charging for content. However, I would like to extend the coverage I do for the sport and can only do so through donation. Your contributions would help in a variety of ways including but not limited to the following examples below.
To purchase a camera in order to conduct interviews with wrestlers, coaches and wrestling personnel. (Thus far JT#1 has raised $75 through generation contribution in an effort to purchase this camera)
To start a wrestling podcast with Dennis Doderer, a former Iowa High School state runner-up, Michigan State wrestler & writer of NYPD BLUE
To help cover the cost of travel and lodging to attend more wrestling events
To create more content to where eventually Johnnythompsonnum1 is covering all Divisions of Collegiate Wrestling. Right now based on money, time & resource restraints Johnnythompsonnum1 is mainly NCAA DI with a bit of NAIA mixed in here and there. I want to eventually be able to cover DI, DII, DIII, NAIA, NJCAA, CCCAA, NCWA & all of Women’s wrestling.
If every reader of mine donated even $0.50 per month it’d be enough to achieve these goals. So please think about making a contribution to Johnnythompsonnum1 to help me extend the collegiate wrestling coverage that I do.
