Tough weight class here at 133 lbs in the Pete Willson Invitational. Four ranked wrestlers, including an All American & four returning place-winners. While we have a clear favorite for a champion, could see some good wars throughout the quarters, semis, bloodround and placement matches to determine our top 8.
#4 Dom Mallinder UW-Whitewater |
6th in the D3 nation last season, Dom Mallinder took 3rd at the Pete Willson Invitational. This weekend he'll be the forerunner to win a title and the statistics are on his side. A 15-3 major decision over Julian Valtierrez, he owns tech falls over both Anthony Zamora (20-4) and Jack Rustad (19-2 & 20-4).
#8 Coby Haney Millikin |
15-1 on the season, Coby Haney is having an outstanding season so far. Dom Mallinder may very well be the forerunner to win a title this weekend, but Haney does own an 11-5 victory over the Warhawk. He also owns a 4-0 win over Julian Valtirrez, a 7-0 decision over Art Martinez, an 8-5 s.v. over Anthony Zamora and an 11-4 decision over Jack Rustad.
#10 Julian Valtierrez North Central |
At the very beginning of the season, I was asked by D3Nation Podcast if I felt there were any darkhorse teams in NCAA DIII wrestling for the '24-'25 season. I said I thought that North Central could be one of them because they have a lot of potential on their team. Julian Valtierrez is one of the Cardinal that I'm referring to when I say that. A bit inconsistent, he has some notable wins. Owns a 13-5 decision over Anthony Zamora & an 8-5 s.v. over Jack Rustad.
#11 Jonah Paulino Roanoke |
Only a freshman, and he's at a 19-3 record on the year. He's faced some tough competition already this season, but once we hit the quarters here at the Pete Willson Invitational, he may very well be facing some of the toughest he's seen. Will be a good test for the young Maroon.
#14 Art Martinez Case Western Reserve |
26-5 on the season so far for Art Martinez competing for Ohio's top ranked college academically. With the negative news about Cleveland State discontinuing their wrestling program, the city of Browns, Cavaliers, and Guardians could use a pick me up. Martinez wrestling well here at the Pete Willson Invitational would be some good news the city could use right now.
U.R. Anthony Zamora Wheaton |
They're hosting the tournament, so you can bet that the Thunder are planning on putting some of their wrestlers on the award stand this weekend. Athony Zamora will be one of them. 6th two seasons ago, he unfortunately came up a match short of a second medal last year. With a 6-4 victory over Julian Valtierrez & a 17-4 major over Jack Rustad, he doesn't look to come up short again.
U.R. Jack Rustad Chicago |
A match shy of Pete Willson Invitational place-winner status last season, Jack Rustad may be inconsistent but he's pulled off some impressive wins thus far in his career. One of them includes a 4-2 decision over Julian Rustad.
