Defending The Title: 1970: Those Who Did and Those Who Didn't Defend the Title

Dwayne Keller of Oklahoma State returned to win his second NCAA title.  As Mike Grant of Oklahoma, Jason Smith & Chuck Jean of Iowa State and Jess Lewis of Oregon State all won their second NCAA titles as well.

1970 Champion 118
Greg Johnson of Michigan State

A two time state champion for Lansing Everett high school, Johnson was one of the best ever to grace the White and Green.  He won three NCAA titles in 1970, 1971 and 1972.

1970 Champion 134 lbs
Darrell Keller of Oklahoma State

An often unstated and overlooked fact about Darrell Keller is that he began his collegiate career at Columbia-Basin where he won back to back NJCAA titles for the Hawks in 1968 and 1969.  Competing for the Cowboys he won NCAA titles in 1970 and 1971.

1970 Champion 142 lbs
Larry Owings of Washington

Forever cemented in folklore as the man who beat Dan Gable, there is so much more to Larry Owings than his 1970's NCAA title win.  He went on to finish as the NCAA runner-up in 1971 and 1972. He was also a three time PAC-12 champion.

1970 Champion 158
Dave Martin of Iowa State

A two time state champion from Algona, Martin made the NCAA finals in 1969, finishing his career as the NCAA champion in 1970.  He later was an assistant at Oklahoma State, also doing color commentary for wrestling with ESPN.

1970 Champion 190
Geoff Baum of Oklahoma State

Baum was a junior when he won his first NCAA title for the Cowboys.  Winning a second title in 1971, he also finished sixth at the NCAA championships as a sophomore in 1969.   He later became an Orthopedic surgeon.
