2023 Southern Scuffle Preview = 133 lbs

Pretty competitive weight class featuring a three time NCAA finalist & six ranked wrestlers over all. This  includes four returning place-winners, among them a champion & a runner-up.

#2
Daton Fix
Oklahoma State

As it would seem now, the only person who can keep Daton Fix from getting his rand raised at the end of a match is Penn State's Roman Bravo-Young.  The former Scuffle champion looks to add a second title to his long list of accomplishments and there doesn't look to be anyone who can even remotely stop him. Question is, will we still feel the same way come tournament's end? A 10-3 decision over Aaron Nagao & a 7-3 decision over Jackson DiSario he has defeated Ramazan Attasauov twice by scores of 5-1 & 13-3.

#16
Ramazan Attasauov
Iowa State

The future international star who will one day rack up an assortment of medals on the international scene first needs to continue racking up medals on the collegiate scene. I can't see Ramazan Attasauov overcoming Fix, but I do think the Cyclone can beat anyone else in this bracket. He is for sure a candidate to make the finals, although not a shoe-in.

#18
Chance Rich
Bakersfield

The Roadrunner has pretty much lived and died by the upset his entire collegiate career thus far. When he's hot, he's hot & while I'll exclude Fix when saying this, there isn't anyone else in this bracket he can't beat. He can be down right tough when he wants to be & seeing him in the 2nd or 3rd place slot come tournament's end would not surprise me at all. He owns a 3-2 victory over Sean Carter & a 9-4 victory over DiSario.

#21
Aaron Nagao
Minnesota

The young Gopher looked very good last season earning a spot in the Southern Scuffle finals. He's very capable of doing so once again, although it will again be a challenge.  He owns an 8-0 major as well as a 4-2 decision over McGwire Midkiff.

#23
Sean Carter
Appalachian State

Although 7th here in the past, Sean Carter failed to place at last year's Southern Scuffle.  The Mountaineer will look to reclaim his place on the award stand.

#26
Connor Brown
Missouri

An NCAA qualifier all the way back in 2018, Connor Brown somehow or another seemed to lose his way in the world of collegiate wrestling. Now he's back on the right path, but he still needs something of monumental size to happen. Earning a top 8 placing here at the Midlands would be that something.

#27
Brayden Palmer
Chattanooga

Tournament host favorite Brayden Palmer looked outstanding at last year's Southern Scuffle. Came back from an early round loss to a strong 3rd place finish. It'll be interesting to see with as loaded as this year's bracket is, if the Moc can repeat similar success. A 3-1 tiebreaker over Sean Carter.

Lot's of unranked talent in this bracket....

U.R.
Jace Koelzer
Northern Colorado

I would definitely look for Jace Koelzer to compete for a spot on the award stand.  Along with an 11-7 victory over Sean Carter the Bear also owns a 3-2 victory over Anthony Sobotker & a 5-2 victory over Midkiff.

U.R.
Jackson DiSario
Stanford

Just think, Bernard Muir tried to get rid of the Cardinal wrestling program. Blows your mind when you consider the talent on the team. A guy like Jackson DiSario. He'll compete for a top 8 showing here at one of the toughest in-season tournaments in DI wrestling.  A 1-0 victory over Sobotker, he also owns an 8-3 decision over Midkiff.

U.R.
Richie Koehler
Rider

Known to pull off an upset or two during his time, Richie Koehler was one match shy of placing at last year's Scuffle.  He owns a 4-2 victory over Palmer.

U.R.
McGwire Midkiff
North Dakota State

You never know what to expect when it comes to McGwire Midkiff. He has his good days and he has his bad days. If this is one of his bad weekends, he could very well go 0-2. If it's one of his good weekends, we could easily see him in blood round contending for a medal.  He owns a 2-0 victory over Koelzer.

U.R.
Anthony Sobotker
Binghamton

Anthony Sobotker will go into this tournament an overlooked, "don't worry about him" opponent with an 0-4 record. That could very well turn out to be in his favor as the Bearcat's specialty via wrestling is the pin. Sobotker is known for putting shoulders to the mat & he's not known to care much whose shoulders they are. Thus far against the competition he's stuck Brown in 2:56 & he's stuck Richie in 1:10.
