Gone, Lost & Forgotten: Their Best = New Mexico

The athletic director first tried to cut Lobo wrestling after the 1986-1987 season, but was unsuccessful as the local community & alumni gathered to keep the program afloat.  Upon the second try to eliminate wrestling, this time it was successful.  The final season of wrestling at New Mexico was also the final season of men's gymnastics and men's swimming & diving.  1998-1999.

New Mexico won the WAC (Western Athletic Conference) title in 1972.

I'm also not 100% positive but I think in some way or another Gascon is related to Gerry & Stephen Abas who were both standouts at Fresno State.
