North Plains District Preview (Sunday February 23rd)

With the addition of Bismarck, I'm not sure if I can get away with calling the North Plains District the "Minnesota Jucos" anymore.  Yet considering that Bismarck is going NAIA next year, maybe I still can.  Either way, I can tell you a few things about the North Plains district.  This year, it looks to be rather dominated Rochester Tech.  The Yellow Jackets by all means, should walk out of Worthington & make the nearly 3 hour trek back to Rochester carrying the team trophy.

**NOTE** - I don't think I'm alone when I say that in following collegiate wrestling, the NJCAA is oen of the hardest divisions to keep up with.  While there are many tools and resources in covering DI, DII, DIII & the NAIA, the NJCAA has been a challenge. I do the best I can, but it can be quite frustrating.  Some teams as of today, have zero results posted on their team websites.  Some schools don't even have photographs or any information on their wrestlers.  I do not like to be negative and if I can help it I try not to complain.  However, I do always try and explain.  Fact is, I don't have a lot to say regarding every weight class.  Yet I still wanted to do this preview, because in some, I have a lot to say.

#8
Tyson Wilson
  Rochester Tech
125

A North Plains District champion last year at 133 lbs & one match shy of earning NJCAA All American honors, Tyson Wilson has dropped down to the 125 lbs weight class.  He will look to earn title #2 & compete for the top 8 finish that he barely missed out on last season.

#10
Jake Aho
Rochester Tech
133

I said I thought the Yellow Jackets would dominate this upcoming weekend, and I meant it.  The 133 lbs favorite is freshman Jake Aho.

#10
Tucker Ginther
Rochester Tech
141

Yet again a Yellow Jacket, our favorite to win a title at 141 lbs, Tucker Ginther.

#9
Cohen Wiste
Rochester Tech
149

Year in and year out, NJCAA wrestling is an episode of UNSOLVED MYSTERIES.  I suppose now that the whole COVID-19 ordeal is finally over, we now know sophomores won't be coming back.  However, many mysteries still remain.  Who is done wrestling? Who is moving on to continue their collegiate career at a four year?  How many freshmen will do another year of NJCAA.  There's no where to go to find these answers easily.

However, I can say that from the looks of things, this may be the last year we see Cohen Wiste in action.  A North Plains District champion last year & 4th in the NJCAA, the Yellow Jacket looks to win another title this weekend & then go on to compete for another All American honor in Council Bluffs.  A nursing major, he seems eager to get into the field.  Nothing verbatim, we could very well see him on the mats next season competing for a 4 year.

A North Plains District champion last year & 3rd in the NJCAA, I'd say it is pretty safe to assume that Leo Tukhlynovych will be our champion this weekend.  Look for a strong runner-up finish out of Sam Rock of Minnesota West.

Once again rankings favor a Yellow Jacket champion, but I wouldn't count out either Andreas Barnett or Tucker Hugg.  These two talents met at last year's North Plains District, with Hugg prevailing to win gold. However they met again at the NJCAA's for 5th place, and it was Barnett that came out on top.  This should once again prove to be an excellent semi-final, with the winner hungry and ready to challenge Tuttle in the finals.
