2023-2024 NCAA DIII The Season: Top Returnees 149 lbs

I don't know if it gets more loaded than 149 lbs in NCAA DIII. Out of the 8 All Americans last season, all 8 return. The national champ, the runner-up, the bronze, EVERYone.  Add to the 8 another 8, for a total of 15.  That's right 15 of the 18 qualifiers return.  Then even more fun, 2 All Americans from 2022, plus 4 more qualifiers from 2022 also make their way back. Case after case after case of why DIII needs more Q's. Not even a team of Johnnie Cochran & Robert Shapiro could deny that.

*NOTE* - I left Hai Siu of Averett off of this preview because I'm pretty sure he's done with his wrestling career. Not 100% positive on that. So if he IS back this season & you're wondering why I don't have him listed here, this is why.

Michael Petrella
 Baldwin Wallace

Only a junior & already a two time NCAA DIII finalist who won the national title this past season. A 70-3 career record thus far & also a two time Central Regional champion. Of his 33 victories last season, 20 of them were via bonus points, 15 coming a way of fall.  Fact of the matter is, if Michael Petrella gets on top of you, your most likely going over. He racked up 27 turns for backpoints last season alone.

Javen Estrada
North Central

As Burl Ives would sing, "Silver & Gold, Silver & Gold."  The gold Javen Estrada collected last season was at the North Central Invitational & at the CCIW.  Silver collections were taken at both the NCAA DIII championships & the Lower Midwest Regional (also 2nd in '22).  The junior was 25-5 on the season.

Hayden Brown
Johnson & Wales

3rd in the DIII national last season, the two time Northeast Regional champion was 30-2 on the year, with one of his only losses coming to D3 champ Michael Petrella 3-0. During the season, he defeated D3 runner-up Javen Estrada 8-3.  It should be noted that in the practice room, he has two of the best backups in the country helping him to be as good as he is. Gabriel McDaniel who had 17 wins of his own, including a 12-8 victory over Mideast Regional runner-up Matt Beyer.  Also pushing him in the room is Matt Garcia who had 25 victories.

Hunter Gutierrez
Stevens Tech

Standout year for the Duck in more than one way.  4th in the Southeast Regional in 2022, just barely missing out on qualification, Hunter Gutierrez went in and took names as he claimed the title this season. This eventually lead to finishing 4th in the D3 nation.  Having finished as the MAC runner-up in both '20 & '22, he was able to secure a title there as well. Of his 26 victories, one was a 1:54 fall over D3 runner-up Javen Estrada.

I want to put in a word for Pasquale Vizzoni as well. I highly doubt with Gutierrez defeating him 9-0 the last the two officially met that he will challenge him for the starting position, but nevertheless he is still an incredibly tough backup.  25 wins last season, he himself has been 3rd & 2nd in the MAC.

Chase Sumner
Ohio Northern

After finishing one match shy of NCAA DIII All American honors in 2022, the two time Central Regional runner-up was able to secure himself a medal last season with a 5th place finish. He was 39-6 on the season.  Again, I have to mention a tough backup, as the Polar Bears have one too. Cael Vanderhorst had 18 wins on the season, including a 7th place showing at the Pete Willson Invitational.

Thomas Monn
McDaniel

Thomas Monn showed up on the scene last year as a freshman & like the IRS collecting taxes, he collected title after title. A Ken Oberman title, a Messiah title, a CCC title & a Mideast Regional title. His only three losses in 39 matches came at the NCAA DIII tournament where he eventually finished in 6th place.

Chase Parrott
Springfield

After finishing 5th in the Northeast Regional in '22, Chase Parrott made the finals last season, securing NCAA DIII qualification, where he would go on to place 7th in the D3 nation. 29-5 on the season, he also won a title at the Ithaca Invitational.

Charlie Stuhl
Augsburg

The Upper Midwest Regional Champion (5th in '22) Charlie Stuhl captured an 8th place Division III All American honor last season going 32-7 on the year.  A title won at the Augsburg Invitational, he was 2nd at the North Central Invite & 3rd at the Luther Invite.

Daniel Uribe
Wabash

With back to back bronze medal finishes at the Central Regional, Daniel Uribe goes into his junior season a two time NCAA DIII qualifier. He was 31-9 on the year.

Matt Beyer
Ithaca

One match shy of NCAA DIII qualification in 2022, Matt Beyer secured his spot at the national championships by making the Mideast Regional finals.  I'm not sure why he didn't compete in the ECWC last season, but he has been runner-up & champion in those championships as well.

Chris Perry
Trinity

Eluded of NCAA qualification by one match as a freshman in 2022, Chris Perry was able to win that qualification match last season when he finished 3rd in the Northeast Regional.

Clayton McDonough
Luther

31-11 on the season last year as a freshman, Clayton McDonough qualified for the DIII championships with a 3rd place showing at the Lower Midwest Regional.

Jake Burford
UW-Whitewater

32-9 on the season, Jake Burford won a Pete Willson Invitational while finishing 2nd at the Upper Midwest Regional. 3rd-2nd-1st thus far in the WIAC, he'll look to secure another title.

Tyler Goebel
UW-La Crosse

30-10 on the season, Tyler Goebel finished 3rd at the Upper Midwest Regional. 2nd the past two seasons at the WIAC, he will look to challenge Jake Burford for a title this season.

Chance Babb
Alvernia

31-15 on the year, the freshman collected bronze medals at both the MAC & the Southeast Regional.

Jeff Johnson
Jersey City

He became the Gothic Knights first NCAA D3 qualifier in 2022 with a 3rd place Mideast Regional Finish. He looked like he was going to become their first two-time NCAA D3 qualifier, when he lost a very close 3-2 match to Matt Beyer, then having to Medical Forfeit out of the rest of the tournament. He was 18-2 on the season.

Colby Frost
Southern Maine

An NCAA DIII qualifier in '22 with a 3rd place Northeast Regional Finish, Colby Frost finished just a little short of another qualification last season with a 5th place finish. 28-7 on the season, he won the Roger Williams Invite.

Zach Sato
UW-Eau Claire

Here's where you really wish DIII wrestling had wild card qualifications.  Zach Sato an NCAA qualifier for the Blugolds in 2022 with a 3rd place Upper Midwest Regional finish, was one match shy of another qualification this past season when he finished in 4th place. 35-9 on the season, he defeated 4th place Al American Hunter Gutierrez 15-0 technical fall. He was runner-up in the Pete Willson Invitational, & he finished 3rd at the WIAC (champion in '22).

Ryan Fleck
Chicago

An NCAA DIII All American with a 6th place finish in 2022 & a Runner-up showing at the Upper Midwest Regional, Ryan Fleck fell a little short of making his second trip to the NCAA D3's with a 5th place showing at the Upper Midwest Regional. He was 4th at the Pete Willson Invitational.

Mike Conklin
TCNJ

An All American in 2022 with an 8th place finish, Mike Conklin a 2022 Mideast Runner-up, with 5th in the Mideast last season. He finished the year 22-10.

Peyton Hearn
Thiel

Here's where the qualification process can really get on your nerves as a wrestling fan. Peyton Hearn, 30-6 on the season defeated Charlie Babb early on in the Southeast Regional tournament, but then lost to him in the qualification match later on, finishing in 4th. As said before, it can be an unforgiving sport at times. Hearn also won the Baldwin Wallace invite.

Kale Buckiso
John Carroll

A year of 4th's for Kale Buckiso last season. 4th at the Trine Invite & 4th at the RIT invite, he was also 4th at the Central Regional, finishing one match shy of D3 qualification.

Michael Roberts
Westminster

17-13 last season as a freshman, Michael Roberts finished one match shy of NCAA DIII qualification.

Landon Card
Cornell (IA)

27 wins on the season for Landon Card, who finished 5th at the Lower Midwest Regional & was one match shy of a medal at the Pete Willson Invitational.

Jaryn Hartranft
Wilkes

Here's a guy that really dealt well with adversity last season. Started off the year 2-13, but would win his next 11 matches, losing only twice more to finish out 13-15.  Was 5th at the Southeast Regional.

Isaac Hawkins
Trine

21-14 on the season, Isaac Hawkins was 6th at the Central Regional & 3rd at the Baldwin Wallace Invitational.

Daniel Ruiz              Jalen Schropp

The Duhawks have two tough wrestlers at 149 lbs. Both whom were NWCA All Americans in 2021. Daniel Ruiz, also a NCAA DIII qualifier in 2020, was 7th at the NWCA.  Jalen Schropp, who has also been 4th & 6th in the Lower Midwest Regional the past two seasons was 6th at the NWCA.

Kobin Karper
Lycoming

6th in the Southeast Regional, Kobin Karper was 23-8 last season.

Darese Sparkman
Mount Union

Also a member of the Raider's Tennis team, Darese Sparkman put together a 19-12 record last season, which included a 7th place finish at the Central Regional & an 8th place finish at the Pete Willson Invitational.

Connor Powell
Johns Hopkins

25-13 on the season, Sophomore Connor Powell was 7th in the Mideast Regional & 2nd at the Racich Rumble.

CJ Shea
Wesleyan

17-8 on the season, C.J. Shea was 7th at the Northeast Regional.

Billy Looney
Dubuque

It was a 12-4 record for Billy Looney last season as he placed 7th at the Lower Midwest Regional.

Morgan Robinson
Roanoke

7th the past two seasons in a row at the Southeast Regional, Morgan Robinson was 20-10 last year.

Micha Worthington
Linfield

11-6 on the season, Micha Worthington was 8th in the Upper Midwest Regional.

Collin Bridges
Washington & Lee

Collin Bridges was 12-15 on the season & 8th at the Southeast Regional.

Mike Glynn III

Mike Glynn III returns to DIII wrestling a two time Mideast Regional place-winner having collected 5th & 8th place finishes thus far. He was 23-15 on the season.

Matt Lucas
Roger Williams

Another wrestler with a 23-15 record last season, Matt Lucas was 8th in the Northeast Regional.

Anthony Ulaszek               Kyler Romero
Wartburg

With the graduation of Lower Midwest Regional champion Kristian Rumph, it'll be between Anthony Ulaszek & Kyler Romero who takes over the starting spot for the Knights. Ulaszek an NCAA DIII qualifier for the USCG in 2022 was 13-3 on the season.  Romero was 15-4, including a 3-2 victory over All American Charlie Stuhl. In an official meeting, Romero defeated Ulaszek 6-1.

Riley Wright
Coe

An NCAA DIII qualifier in 2020 & a NWCA All American with a 5th place finish in 2021, Riley Wright was 2nd at the Luther Invite last season.

Elijah Cyr
Castleton

30-16 on the season, Elijah Cyr was 6th at both the Ithaca Invite & the Roger Williams Invite. Among his 30 victories he defeated NCAA Division II qualifier Tommy Nichols 7-5 s.v.

Edward Pinc

24 wins on the season for Edward Pince, one of which was a 3:36 fall against DI Thomas Deck.

Dominick Vinci
Alfred State

Going into his sophomore season, Dominick Vinci was 23-10 last year.

Dante Monaco
Ursinus

7th at the Mideast Regional in 2022, Dante Monaco missed out on a medal at last year's championships. 20-13 on the season, he will look to reclaim a top 8 showing.

Mason Wersinger
St John Fisher

20-7 on the season, Mason Wersinger was 5th at the Racich Rumble.

Tyler Rossini

Pretty good freshman season for Tyler Rossini. 29 wins, with silvers collected at both the Ithaca Invitational & the ECWC.
