45th Annual Midwest Classic Preview - 174 lbs (Fri Dec 13th & Sat Dec 14th)

Tough bracket here at 174 lbs.  We have 16 ranked wrestlers and 7 of those 16 are within the top 10.   Four returning place-winners from last year, including last year's runner-up.   Will be some great matches to look forward to in Indianapolis this weekend.

#1
Josh Kenny
Grand Valley State

If you know me, the #1 thing I love to see in wrestling is the reinstatement of a wrestling program that had been previously discontinued. Not only did the Lakers bring back wrestling, but in their first season back they produce an NCAA DII champion!  Not only that, but he was also made the Midwest Classic finals!  This year with a current record of 42-7, Josh Kenny is looking to capture gold in both areas. It starts here in Indianapolis.

Among his wins, he's defeated Brody Hemauer 13-9 & 17-2 technical falls.  An 11-5 win over Wyatt Reisz, he's defeated Matt Ortiz 4-1 in sudden victory & he owns a 5-4 decision over Hayden Pummel.  Also owns a 21-4 technical falls over David Davis.

#2
Trey Sizemore
Indianapolis

The former Illinois Fighting Illini had himself an outstanding NCAA DII season last year competing for the Greyhounds, capturing 5th at the NCAA DII championships & 4th at the Midwest Classic.  An 8-2 decision over Josh Kenny suggest that he will compete for this year's title, but that's not the only reason to think he may walk out of Indianapolis carrying some gold.  He also owns both a 9-1 as well as an 11-3 major decision over Cole Hernandez.  Both a 9-6 as well as a 12-5 decision over Gus Dalton.  Both a 7-4 s.v. as well as a 6-1 decision over Matt Ortiz.  Also a 4-1 s.v. over Wyatt Reisz.

#3
Cole Hernandez
Western Colorado

A two time NCAA DII All American (6th & 7th) and a two time Midwest Classic place-winner (7th & 3rd) Cole Hernandez looks to capture his third MWC medal this weekend, looking to stand as high on the podium as he can.  Despite the times he has lost to Trey Sizemore, he's also defeated the Greyhound 14-6.  He also owns two techs over Gus Dalton 20-4 & 20-5, as well as a 15-2 major decision.  A 5-1 decision over Cole Hivnor, he defeated Brody Hemauer 15-10.

#5
Hayden Pummel
Glenville State

The Pioneers picked up a good one when Hayden Pummel transferred in from Northern Illinois.  Thus far he's looked very tough with a 2-0 win over Sevi Garza and a 6-3 win over Clint Morrisette.

#6
Sevi Garza
Ashland

One match away from being an NCAA DII All American last season competing at 165 lbs, Sevi Garza is now testing himself up at 174.  Thus far in '24-'25, he brings a 14-2 record into Indianapolis.

#9
Matt Ortiz
McKendree

One match shy of placing at the NCAA DII championships last season, it looks like Matt Ortiz will not miss out on earning a medal this weekend at the Midwest Classic.  Among his wins a 12-1 major decision over Cole Hivnor, an 8-4 decision over Logan Berger & both a 5-4 as well as a 2-0 win over Brody Hemauer.

#11
Nathan Buckovich
Lander

Another wrestler that has came down to 174 from the 184 lbs weight class.  13-2 on the season, owns a 10-5 decision over Dayton Fields.

#12
Cole Ritter
Maryville

5th in the D2 nation, Cole Ritter was 4th at the Midwest Classic in 2023, but came up short of a medal last year.  He will look to recapture his place on the award stand this weekend.

#14
Wyatt Lidberg
Mary

Wyatt Lidberg is another wrestler that comes down to 174 after competing at 184 for quite some time. Up a weight class he's put together 24-9 & 29-8 records the past two seasons.

#15
Wyatt Reisz
Colorado School Of Mines

Wyatt Reisz has some nice wins on his record that suggest he'll be going for a top 8 finish here in Indianapolis this weekend.  A 12-10 victory over Cole Hernandez, he owns a 10-3 decision over Logan Berger & a 6-2 decision over Gus Dalton.

#16
Gus Dalton
Colorado Mesa

One match shy of placing in the D2 nation & one match shy of placing at the Midwest Classic last season, Gus Dalton is looking to collect in both areas, with his first stop being here in Indianapolis.  Among his wins a 7-0 decision over Cole Hivnor.

#17
David Davis
Tiffin

The Dragon was one match shy of being an NCAA DII All American last season.  Among the place-winner candidates this weekend, he owns a 4-1 sudden victory over Kane Kettering.

#18
Kane Kettering
Seton Hill

An NCAA DII qualifier last season, Kane Kettering owns a 10-5 decision over Dalton Gimbor.

#19
Dayton Fields
Newberry

The former NEO NJCAA standout earned NCAA DII qualification for the Wolves last season & will look to earn a medal here in Indianapolis this weekend.

R.S.?
Brody Hemauer
UW-Parkside

Haven't seen Brody Hemauer compete yet in '24-'25.  Not sure if he's redshirting, injured or what. What I do know is that if he does end up competing this weekend, he IS a contender.  6th in the D2 nation last season, he has the wins to prove it.  A 2-1 decision over Trey Sizemore, and a 17-1 tech over David Davis.

R.S.?
Cole Hivnor
Gannon

Another wrestler we have yet to see in '24-'25 that will most certainly be one to keep an eye on if he is competing this weekend.  An NCAA DII qualifier last season, he was one match shy of earning a top 8 finish at the Midwest Classic.

U.R.
Logan Berger
Chadron State

One match away from earning a medal here last season, Logan Berger could very well pull off a few upsets and surprise some folks this weekend.  Owns both a 2-1 tiebreaker & a 5-4 decision over Wyatt Reisz.

U.R.
Bryce Dauphin
Central Oklahoma

Another unranked wrestler that could potentially make some noise this weekend is Bryce Dauphin.  Owns a 4-1 decision over Cole Ritter.

#10
Clint Morrisette
King

Here was have the opposite of Garza.  Clint Morrisette comes to 174, down from 184, where he was a an NCAA DII qualifier in 2023.  So far in '24-'25, he carries a record of 16-2.

#10 @ 165
Dalton Gimbor
Kutztown

A two time NCAA DII qualifier, Dalton Gimbor was one match shy of placing at last year's national tournament. He was also 7th at the Midwest Classic.  Time to see what he can do at 174.
