2023-2024 NJCAA The Season: Top Returnees 133 lbs

Made a promise at the beginning of last year that in the '23-'24 season JT#1 would start doing coverage of NJCAA wrestling!  Seems fairly straightforward. Two year programs.  If you were a freshman last season, then you're a sophomore this season. If you were a sophomore last season, you are moving on to a four year school to finish up your last two years of eligibility.  Unfortunately, it isn't that simple.

Some of last year's freshmen will be redshirting this season. Then with the whole COVID-19 ordeal, some of last year's 'sophomores' will still be back.

So with that said, take it easy on me if some of these guys listed are redshirting or have already moved on to a four year school!

And of course, unintentionally I'll probably leave off a few names that belong on the list. If so, mention their names. The more the merrier.

Now....

The top returnees in NJCAA wrestling '23-'24 133 lbs!

Cody Phelps
Western Wyoming

The Mustangs certainly seem to have it going on in regards to top returnees in the lower weights.  3rd in the NJCAA championships last season, I would most certainly call Cody Phelps a title contender.  Of note had a very nice 9-3 decision over Hunter Leake of California Baptist at the Reno Tournament of Champions.

Mauro Michel
Southwestern Oregon

It'll be a rough road for the newcomers of 133 lbs this season, as Mauro Michel who was 6th at last years NJCAA championships is one of three returning All Americans.

Paul Ruff
Iowa Western

The two time Nebraska High School runner-up had a very good season last year, placing 8th at the NJCAA championships.

Joseph Petrone
Nassau

Had to miss his senior year of high school due to COVID & has more than made up for within the NJCAA ranks. Last year won the Wildcat Open with 3rd place finishes at both the NYS Championships & the Messiah Open.  Was 2nd at Districts, finishing one match shy of All American.

Aidan O'Dell
Cowley

A three time Oklahoma high school state finalist, Aidan O'Dell was one match shy of earning NJCAA All American honors last season.

Tanner Williams
Labette

Yet another 133 lbs'er who was one match shy of All American honors last season, Tanner Williams will be looking to make the award stand this year.

Ayden Rader
Iowa Lakes

The Pennsylvania native was 3rd at both the York Open & the North Central District qualifying for the NJCAA championships last season.

Trey Kratko
Patrick & Henry

Kratko was an NJCAA qualifier for the Patriots last season.

Brooks Cowell
Iowa Central

Right at home in Fort Dodge, Brooks Cowell was an NJCAA qualifier for the Titans last season.

Derek Renninger
Thaddeus Stevens

Renninger was an NJCAA qualifier for the Bulldogs this past season.

Jackson McCormick
Rochester Tech

Despite narrowly missing out on qualification for the high school state championships of Wisconsin, Jackson McCormick would not be denied his quest to qualify for the NJCAA tournament last season. This year the Yellow Jacket will look for All American honors.

Chris Kirchner
Northland

Kirchner was an NJCAA qualifier for the Pioneers last season.

Gabe Livingston
Southwestern Michigan

Livingston was an NJCAA qualifier for the Roadrunners last season.

Jacob Waddoups
Snow

Waddoups was among six NJCAA qualifiers for the Badgers last season.

Johnny Colon
Itasca

Johnny Colon was an NJCAA qualifier for the Vikings last season.
