2023-2024 NAIA The Season: Top Returnees 184 lbs

184 lbs should be an interesting weight.  Half of the All Americans from last season return, plus an All American from 2022 & an All American from 2021.

Coleman Bryant
Southeastern

Coleman Bryant returns for his final season having taken runner-up honors at both the NAIA championships as well as the Appalachian Athletic Conference last year.

Sawyer Hobbs
Providence

The four time Idaho High School State champ had himself an outstanding rookie season last year, taking 5th place NAIA All American honors.

J.D. Perez
Ottawa

The New Mexico native was 34-9 last season with 18 falls capturing both a Missouri Valley Invitational Title & his second NAIA All American honor. 5th in the NAIA nation in 2022, he was 6th last season.

Austin Vanek
Montana State Northern

Only a sophomore himself, the Criminal Justice major took 7th place NAIA honors last season as a freshman.

Sam Irwin
Reinhardt

The two time Georgia high school state champ goes into his final season having finished one match shy of NAIA All American honors last year. He was fourth in the Appalachian Athletic Conference.

Will Speight
Lourdes

Another Criminal Justice major among our 184 lbs'ers, Will Speight goes into his senior season having thus far captured Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic bronze & silver.  Perhaps this is the season he'll bring home a gold. 6th at the Missouri Valley Invitational, he was 3rd at the Patriot Open, finishing one match shy of a medal at the NAIA nationals.

Hayden Wempen
Missouri Valley

A Great Plains Athletic Conference champion last season, Hayden Wempen finished one match shy of NAIA All American honors.

Brett Bober
Baker

Another tough freshman from last season, Brett Bober returns for his sophomore season having racked up a series of top finishes at some of the NAIA's toughest tournaments. A Heart of America runner-up, he was 7th at the Missouri Valley Invitational, 6th at the Doane Open & 5th at the Grand View Open.

Kyle Knudtson
Eastern Oregon

Also a pitcher on the baseball team, Kyle Knudtson missed out on All American honors last season, having taken 4th place in 2022.  A Cascade Conference champion in 2022, he was a runner-up last season.  Other highlights on the year were an 8th place finish at the Missouri Valley Invitational, a 4th place finish at the Grand View Open & an Eastern Oregon Mountaineer Invitational championship. He will look to reclaim the Cascade Conference crown & earn his second AA.

Isaiah Morales
Menlo

Quite bit of young talent at this weight as we take a look at another sophomore who returns for the '23-'24 season.  23-10 last season as a freshman, Isaiah Morales was 3rd in the Cascade Conference, taking a runner-up finish at the Menlo Open & 4th place at the Missouri Valley Invitational.

Baron Gaunt
Vanguard

Burrito, no beans Baron Gaunt returns for his junior season having thus far placed 3rd & 5th in the tough Cascade Conference. One match from NAIA All American honors in 2022, he was a Mile High Open runner-up last year.

Kaden Martin
Arizona Christian

And yet another tough sophomore.  Kaden Martin was an NAIA qualifier last season, having placed 6th in the Cascade Conference.

Thomas Ketchen-Carter
Cumberlands

A junior this season, TKC won a Mid-South Conference title last year.

Brahn Howard
Texas Wesleyan

The Houston, Texas native goes into his final season as a Ram having won a conference title last year.

Logan Davidson
Concordia (Nebraska)

Also a linebacker on the Bulldog football team, Logan Davidson, another of the tough sophomores returning in '23-'24, was 3rd in the GPAC last season.

Tyson Beauperthuy
Grand View

If you want to talk about someone who might not be on the radar going into the season, who will soon enough be listed among the 2024 NAIA Champion hopefuls, here is your man. Tyson Beauperthuy was an NAIA runner-up in 2021, having finished a disappointing R12 as a sophomore in 2022.  He took last year as a redshirt I believe, winning the Luther Hill Invite, taking runner-up honors at the Grand View open & a 3rd place finish amongst Division II competition at the UNK Hospitality Open.

Cameron Cornman
Graceland

He may be from Missouri, but he competes for an Iowa school. Is their a more Iowan name than Cornman? I don't know if it gets any more "Iowa" than that.  Cornman was a runner-up at the Coe Invitational last season.

Myles Starke
Life

Myles Starke won both the Life Open as well as the George Open last season.
