Gone, Lost & Forgotten: Their Best = George Washington

If anyone is as angry and upset over the loss of college wrestling programs as I am, it is who I'm about to talk about now.  The George Washington Colonials began wrestling during the 1968-1969 season and ended after the 1988-1989 season.  There best wrestler?

Wade Hughes
During his time as a Colonial, Wade Huges put together one of the most impressive career records ever seen in NCAA Division I wrestling.  He was 182-7.  The second most amount of wins of any Division I wrestling with John Fisher of Michigan with 183 wins in the lead.  Every bit as impressive, Hughes had a senior season of 57-4.  Another record that still stands to this day.  In that season, Hughes finished in third place at the NCAA championships. He also placed sixth at the Midlands tournament and was selected as a member of the All Star team.

Post his collegiate career, Hughes coached at Northern Michigan University for a while as well as Howard University, both schools that like George Washington have since dropped their varsity wrestling programs.
