DeleteAdd Bret Hart, Owen Hart, Eddy Gurerro, Chris Beniot, Davey Boy Smith, Dynamite Kid, Rick & Scott Steiner, Dan Severn, Dr. Death Steve Williams, Brickhouse Brown, Alberto Del Rio, Rick Martell, B.Brian Blair, Jim Bruzel,Marty Janetty and Roddy Pipper to name a few.
ReplyDeleteKeep in mind this was only CURRENT roster members when I wrote this.
DeleteBret was a Provincial champ as was Owen & many of his brothers. The best in the family amateur wrestling wise was Keith. Keith wrestled for the University of Saskatchewan and took a bronze medal at the Conference championship in 1974.
I'm not familiar with Benoit's or Davey Boy Smith's amateur background. I read Tommy Billington's book and he mentioned wrestling in school for a short while.
Eddie Guerrero wrestled for the University of New Mexico. He didn't have as good of a Freshman season as he hoped to and he quit to do pro wrestling.
The Rechsteiner's were both standouts at Michigan. Both BIG 10 finalists, Scott was an All American in 1986.
Dan Severn multiple time AA at Arizona State
Steve Williams a four time AA at Oklahoma
I know nothing about Brickhouse Brown's amateur career, I'd love to know more
Same with Alberto
Are you sure about Brian Blair? I was thinking he did every sport in high school EXCEPT wrestling.
Not sure on Brunzel either
As to Jannetty he was very good. Three time State qualifier & a two time NJCAA qualifier for Chattahoochee Valley
Piper won a Provincial title at 167 lbs
